Super full, and full?
March 01, 2015, 09:50:48 PM
Has anybody had any luck with the Rem turkey super full, and full chokes? I have an 870 express 26" and the only turkey choke I have is the tight wad 570, I had luck with hevi 13 #7's. I would like to try the full with some different loads I have, but the weather is terrible here! I thought I'd ask before I bought super full and tried it, I did notice that it was for lead only, but that's fine, all my loads are lead except the hevi's.

I put the full on my daughter's youth 870 21" bbl with fed HW#7. I wanted a little more wiggle room, as she is a new shooter. It is perfect at 30 yards and not quite good enough at 40 so I will limit her shots to inside 30 yards. I doubt the straight full will give you an acceptable 40 yard pattern. I would start with super full. Actually I would start with a Trulock or a Sumtoy, but only if I wanted a tight pattern.

The Rem super full works great in my 21" youth 870.
With the Federal Grand Slam 5 or 6 shot.
The Hevi 6's which have killed over a dozen toms.
And the Federal Hw 7's which do in the 160's now.

I'm curious what is the choke size on the super full? I stopped by a local sporting goods store today after work, and they had 3 boxes of #6 Fed HW, at 23.95 box. I may get a box and try them when payday rolls around. I already have two boxes of hevi 13 7's, and ton of other shells that I've collected for the last couple years. I think I'll give the super full a try!

Well theres the lead only super full which is .572 and theres the now discontinued Remington Heavyshot superfull, which is .575.Everything ive heard has said that the leead only patterns better with most loads. I have been killing birds with the lead only .572 for 12 years running.Never tried the heavyshot rsf. Back when i started i used Win Supreme #5s and Fed pre-fc wad #5s. Nowadays i have graduated to Fed HW #7s getting 130-140s patterns with that choke. I also have a sumtoy on the way to see if itll beat my rsf.I would hold out and try to find Fed HW 7s over the 6s.But if you only can find the hw 6s and can get them to pattern good id shoot them over heavy13 7 any day. IMO, Fed HW vs. Heavy 13 is like comparing Lead vs Steel.

I wasn't totally pleased with the hevi's,and a 570 tight wad choke,114 in 10. I can order some HW 7's when I order the super full choke. I tried every turkey load I have, and 114 was the best I got, everything else was in the 50-60's. I think the XX 5's put up 73 in 10", I would like to get this one ironed out before season, but also don't want to break the bank doing it!

I had no luck with Remington's Superfull choke on my 11-87. The Hevishot choke works well with lead and of course their hevishot shells (magnum blend).

I love the flitecontrol wad with buckshot out of my 12. It actually shoots best out of an improved cylinder choke (It is nice being able to switch between flightcontrol buck, standard buck, and slugs and the situation and habitat dictate). When I got my 870 youth I tried Federal Mag-Shok 5s and 6s out of IC, Mod, and Full chokes. Got good patterns with both the 5s and 6s out of the full choke but the patterns were a little sparse, especially with the 5s. Tried the heavyweight 7s out of a Carlsons standard full choke (.590) this past weekend. I got 218 pellets in 10 inches at 30 and 116 in 10 inches at a lazered 40 yards. I was very pleased and would not hesitate to take a shot at 40 yards. In my experience the flitecontrol wad performs well out of chokes more open than super full or xtra full. Don't discount the standard full when testing.

I cannot shoot flite control out of my super full chokes. The shot pattern is sporadic.
