Picked up my new gun SA-459

Went shopping today and picked up a bunch of guns.  I found I kept going back to the fit and feel of the Weatherby SA-459 and even though I am concerned about the rear ring, the salesman (who is friends with a couple friends of mine and a firearm instructor) told me he was sure I would end up liking it.  But if not, there are lots of other options.  I kept thinking about FL-Boss's ringing endorsement and I really liked the way it felt.  The guy told me if I signed up for a Bass Pro credit card, I got 10% off the entire purchase!  $630 out the door with some cleaning patches, 2 boxes of Fed HW #7, a sling and a box of Hevi 13 Mag Blend.

So I have a few questions.

I obviously want to shoot Fed HW 7.  I know Sumtoy will give me the best numbers, but I am not looking for an overly tight constriction. I kill birds at 15 yards pretty regularly.  I want to feel good at 40 (with a 2 yard whoops factor).

I have seen Carlsons 585, 575 and of course the Sumtoy (562-5?).

Is it safe with the ported factory choke to try it too with the Fed HW shells?

I bought some Hevi Magnum Blend just for giggles, since I got it for 10% off, just to pattern it.

If I can get this gun to an even, non splotchy, 150 pattern at 40 yards, I will be a happy camper.

I am gonna shoot it in the morning with some light loads, just to get a feel for it and will hold off on ordering any chokes until some of you guys give me some advice. Thanks in advance.

JEBS

Roost are you a staffer or something at jebs now? If so that's fine just wondered why all the sudden you are so on board with that choke so adamantly.  I totally agree it's a very good choke just trying to figure out why you all the sudden think it's the best one out there for any gun

Not trying to steer you one direction or the other, I think William at Sumtoy and the folks at Trulock are top notch and make fine products but  seeing as you're not sure which direction to go in at first I'd suggest trying the Carlson chokes. They aren't real expensive and I've seen good, even patterns thrown by them. You may be able to pick one up on fleabay for under $30, which is less dinero than Sumtoy or Trulock.

I do not have any experience with Jebs so I cannot speak to their effectiveness.

Shot through the stock choke and very unimpressed.

Mag blend - 138 at 30!
Fed HW#7 - 97 at 30.

Did not bother wasting more shells.  Will start shopping.  I liked the way it shot, feels nice and steady.  Now gotta start trying chokes.  I hope Trulock makes one cause wow did it shoot nice in the youth 870.

I'll look for a Carlson's too. Maybe have one for when I am hunting tight woods as well.

Trial and error...none are a given number at 40.  Good choices mentioned here already

cutt down

On my sa-459 I shoot a Sumtoy 562-5 mostly with 180+/- in the 10 @ 40yds. I do have a Rob Roberts .570 that puts up 165+/- numbers & is really even. I could shoot either one & not bat an eye either way. If you don't want the Sumtoy then I suggest you give Rob Roberts a call. Here's a pic of my  set-up. Just put the FFlll on it this year, had a tru-glo on it but like the lower profile of the FFlll much better. I also put a Beretta 6mm gel pad that sticks on & it super comfortable.

.

Probably why your numbers were so bad for the Fed Hwt #7s. Ported chokes mangle the flightcontrol wad pedals and impend their proper function resulting in poor patterns.

Welcome to the club. You will love that gun.  Don't overlook that factory choke... like you I didn't want a overly tight pattern for hunting. The factory choke actually did pretty good.  Yes, the Sumtoy will give you the highest numbers and look cool on paper... nearly 200 hits for me.

But for actual real world hunting I like the Carlson ( Or Trulock) .. I get about 150 hits from that choke... little more spread out.   Those two choke are the exact same and made by one or the other... regardless of what anyone says.

Federal HW #7 all the way.....regardless of the choke.  And yes, all the choke seems fine with HW loads... I haven't had any issues.

Also in regards to the ported chokes and flight control.. this is mainly an issue with the 12 ga shells (not as much with 20ga)   I didn't notice any issues with the flight control and factory ported choke that came with the gun.

Also guys - I just saw this gun for $479 today at Bass Pro Shops.  If you have a Bass pro nearby.. great deal.
