I recently bought a rem 1187 with a 21 inch barrel.  Is it safe to assume that the shorter the barrel the tighter the choke should be?  I see a couple of chokes on the classifieds that I would like to buy but I need a starting point.  Thanks for any info you can give me..

Longshanks

.655-.660 for lead...665-.670 for HTL. That will get you in the ballpark then it's just trying different loads.

A 660 or a 665 would be a good start.

The Wright's .650 and the SSX .643 work very well with those shorter barrels. I'd recommend either Hevi-13 or WLB shells with that combo.

Thanks,

I hunt with a Weatherby pa-459 (18.5" barrel) I'm shooting a SumToy .650 with excellent results using longbeard 3" 6's & 5's

It depends on what load you plan on shooting in that gun, Bigfoot.  But to answer your question, yes , a shorter barrel normally likes to be choked tighter than a longer barrel.

With that short barrel I'd choke it down to .650-.655.
