I am shooting a Winchester 1300 12 gauge 22" barrel. I hunt steep hills that are thick wooded most of my shout are 20 to 25 yards. I have a Carlson .690 extra full flush choke tube. How will that tube work and what shell should I try?

at that range any good 2 3/4 or 3" turkey load will work just fine, I would not waste money on ant type of heavy shot. I would shoot #6 shot but there again at those ranges 4's and 5's are gonna have a good pattern to. I wouldnt go any tighter with your choke or your gonna be to tight at those ranges.

Tail Feathers

I second that.  Get some Winchester Turkey 6's at $8 or so per box of ten and see how it does at your ranges.  Should be good to go and for an unbeatable price.

Yep at that distance #7-1/2 bird shot is enough.

Hey Tom,

You've had good advice. There is however no substitute for some range time. I'd recommend that you take your gun/choke to the range with some of the shells recommended and some "big paper", at least 3' x 3' and shoot a few rounds just to see how it performs. Then you'll know if it works for you at those ranges.

Good luck this season.

Thanks,
Clark

Yup go get some cheap walmart turkey loads.  Get a few boxes to shoot at to check POA/POI  then go have fun hunting.   :anim_25:

3" 870 Shell Shucker

You have the luxury of using Improved Modified (IM), Light Full (LF), Full (F), or Extra Full (XFull) / (XF) / (EF) chokes at 20-25 Yards.  Shucks, many old timers would have just used Modified (M) / (MOD).  Go pattern some #6's or even #7.5's at 20 and 30 Yards.

Like what was said, a simple shell, nothing fancy
23 yds
Winchester XX 2.75" 6's
Sumtoy .695
211 hits

23YDS
These are the Winchester Longbeards 3" 6's at 23 yds.
I actually like the above pattern better, that being said, they are all going to take a turkey out at that range...

These are both Sumtoy chokes

.692 LB 3" #6'S

.702 LB 3" #6'S

Note:
If you do happen to get a bird out at 40 yds the Winchester Longbeards would be my shell, just in case.

Rather then a choke tube I would get a recoil pad for the 1300,,they kick like a mule!!

They do kick. I just finished (tonight) removing the plastic stock and forend and replaced with a dark stained birch stock and forend. It definitely added some well balanced weight. We'll see if recoil is more tolerable.

Your choke tube is fine for that range. I'd look for some 2-3/4" #6 lead from your favorite ammo manufacturer. I personally like Winchester XX.

Thanks for all the help. I thought I would try the 2.75" XX Win 6's. I also want to try some 3" XX Win 5's. I'll let you know how it goes.
