To those of y'all that shoot slug guns (especially in 20 gauge) what slug have you found that gives the most terminal performance(knock down). All comments, thoughts, and help are greatly appreciated.  God bless

We recently participated in a youth hunt on a National Refuge that required non-toxic slugs due to secondary mortality in bald eagles feeding on the ofal (gut piles).  They were very informative and conducted studies on the fragmentation of lead shotgun slugs.  We shot the Remington solid copper and found the accuracy performance to equal Hornady SST slugs.  The copper slugs have 100% weight retention (as opposed to fragmentation like lead).  The deer we harvested was shot broad side at approx. 50 yards and had complete pass through.  The deer only went about 60 yards.  Either the Hornady or Remington solid copper would be recommended.

Previously, Federal Barnes Expanders and Currently Federal Trophy Copper slugs are outstanding. I shoot them out of a beretta pintail slug gun and my girls shoot them from a Savage 220f. Both guns shoot amazing at 100 with these. Terminal performance is very effective to say the least. We shoot 3" slugs in both guns only because they are a little more accurate for some reason. All of our recovered slugs look like a model for the perfect mushroom.

If you can find the Remington accutips in 20 ga. They have been very accurate out of several guns we have tried. Every deer I have  with them made it less than 50 yards. Personally I have yet to find a slug or muzzleloader bullet that will anchor a deer without hitting the spine or high shoulder.

Remington AccuTips out of my girlfriends Savage 220 do superb.  As others have mentioned the Federal Coppers if you can find them do very well also.

I shoot the Remington Copper Solids in my 12 ga H&R slug gun and they flat out shoot.

I've shot slug guns for several decades. The very best slugs that I can find are Brenneke K.O.s. They make big holes and have great terminal energy. Most times, with a well placed shot, a deer will go to ground without moving. On those rare occasions when they have not, they leave a very clear & easy to follow trail, for a very short distance.

Several years ago, I was asked by a major U.S. manufacture to evaluate their slugs against a variety of other brands. They did not include Brenneke but I purchased some just to see how they did against the much more expensive other brands. I used both a Shaw rifled barrel in my SBE and a smooth bore barrel with the same gun. The Brenneke won every time for accuracy and the energy transmitted by those slugs is amazing.

My dad tagged a 3.5 year old buck two days ago with the 3" accutips out of a twenty gauge H&R. Deer was at 110 yards quartering away hard, dad hit him just behind the last rib. Buck made it less than 50 yards and fell over dead. Slug was just behind the shoulder, I popped it out with a pocket knife and it looked like the text book slug opening. Six pedals peeled back and stayed in one piece. I haven't put it on the scale yet but has to be 80-90% weight retention. Good luck.
