For a long time I have been scouring places for some infamous wood to make a couple calls from. I finally found some....I got some from the USS North Carolina Battleship! It is old growth teak wood, from the ship's original deck! How cool is that? So I have made so far this Lil' yelper. The pieces are not big enough to make a box call, but I do have some large enough for tube, and scratch boxes.

The body and bell are made from the teak, the mouthpiece is hen  bone and the bell cap is Indian Ebony....

It would be cool to find someone who served on that ship who could use it.

I have enough blanks of this to make a four piece set of calls. There is gonna be a Killer Tube ... this Yelper ... a scratch box ... and a jet slate. I have wanted to make a great memorial set for a while. Already excited about how it is coming along. Going to sit inside a red oak box with claro burl veneering and a brass tag on the top designating where the teak came from. Should be a looker set for sure especially for anyone who may have served on her, or had someone who did.

How much wood do you need to make a call like that. My Grandfather is a "Plank owner" (first crew on ship) of the USS Yorktown CV-10. and my dad has one of the original teak planks. Great way to honor the plank.

That ship was commissioned in 1941 and decommissioned in 1947.
