looking back and thinking about tommarrow

this post is a little deep for me I am usually all about the fun-zone and not real serious,  but I got my heart strings pulled this last week,  so here goes,  and by-the-way sorry I have not been posting much lately  ,  if you are not one of the old hands that know me   I am a Mississippi rural Pastor that love to hunt and fish.   I have a wife and 2 sons , 1 daughter and my hunting mentor is my father-in-law (aka) Grunt,  cant tell how he got the nick name :  here goes:


I have caught a few catfish:


and so has my son Jake


We have even been fouranate enough to take a few deer and turkey as well



Now as I look back I realize that most of what I have learned about hunting and fishing I have been taught by Grunt ,   for over 25 years we have been chasing critters and trying to catch fish.  we have hunted and fished in :  MISSISSIPPI, LA, ARK, TENN, OLK, AL, GA, IOWA, MO, KANSAS, COLORADO, CA, CANADA, TEXAS, NEW YORK,  and had a great time every where we have been(by-the-way all of this was done by country folk in the lower middle class at best ).    Oh the memories that we have made I will Cherish to my grave.    So part of what I want to say is " Thanks Grunt" .  "Thanks for taking us hunting and fishing".   

Now this last week the catfish were right and Jake and Grunt went after them they stayed 2 days camped on a river bank and I was able to spend one night with them .   It was on that river bank that I noticed something ,  Grunt and I both have lost a step or two, we are slipping , due to age and injury,  but Grunt seemed really feeble,  its really sad , and as I thought about this I came to the conclusion that if we live natural lives ,   Grunt will not always hunt and fish with us .    ( now none of us are promised tomorrow, so we all need to get right with our MAKER) I think its time now for some of the rest of our group to pick up the torch so to speak and teach others as Grunt has taught so many.   here is a picture that means a lot to me ,  I took it while we were on this last trip:

I too, am a rural mississippi preacher and like you, I owe my upbringing in the outdoors to two "old men."  We lost one of them three years ago and while I know He is with The Lord, I'm still sad in his absence.  I agree with you that we need to step up and follow in the footsteps of our teachers.  Thanks for jogging my memory this morning with your post.  Grunt sounds like a fine man.

Thank you for sharing that. Reminds me so much of my grandpa that passed away 6 years and 3 months ago. We have big footprints to fill. Blessings

Thanks for sharing the story. I try to emphasize to young people and all folks that the fun, good times and the friends your are experiencing today must be cherished. Times change, people change, and pass on, and those days can never be recreated once it's gone, it's gone. Take lots of pictures and Pass it on.
