On my property I plant about 2-3 acres a year in small 1/4-1/2 acre plots of winter rye, oats and clover mix. I plan these about mid-late August. Planting clover in the fall is the easiest way. The fall heads out in the spring and when it starts to fall over turkeys can eat the seed heads.
rye, oats, clover combo is the cheapest and most attractive mix I have ever planted. It can withstand heavy grazing pressure and it greens up nicely in the spring. With a few timely sprayings for grass you shouldn't have to plant but about once every 3-5 years.
In areas I cannot access well I go in around May and I spray once a month with 2qts of gly per acre until August. So I spray May, June and July. In August I broadcast around 80-100pds of rye oer acre and clover right before a rain. Comes up beautiful,.
