Mag Blend & Hevi 13 Question

I have read posts saying the new ones have changed and not nearly as good.  My question is there a tell tale sign of whether I am buying the old ones or new ones at the store.  I guess what I am asking are there certain numbers I should not buy.  I asked the guy at the store if they were old or new and he did not know.

Everyone on the site is saying that the shells have changed, that the wad is a different wad, the components are different. Nothing has changed with the shells. They are the same as they were last year. It's the same song and dance every year, something has changed with HEVI-Shot and they don't shoot like the "old" ones did. I feel like this is related more to the fact that there are new products on the market that lots of companies are trying to push to give HEVI a run.

I think its more related to the fact that something HAS changed. When you have two shells from two different lot numbers and one continually puts 50 more pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards than the other then you try and tell me nothing changed. People have cut these shells open in the past and verified a difference. Are the 2014 shells different from 2013, I do not know but I can guarantee there was a difference between the 2012 shells and some of the 2013 shells because I have seen this for myself.

A question from someone has probably patterned fewer loads in my lifetime than some of you do in a year.  What kind of variation do you normally see in a pattern from shot to shot?  Is plus or minus 10-15% between patterns normal.  I would think that just moving the ten inch circle around and trying to find the densest part of the pattern would introduce some variation.  I'm asking because I really don't know.  Has anyone shot three consecutive patterns of the same shell at the same range and counted all three to see what the difference is between them? I know I haven't.  Heck, after trying three different shells and trying one or two at 20 yards as well, I've had about all of the recoil I care to absorb for one day.

Yes, a 10% variation would be normal, give or take a little. There are a lot of variables here. Temperature, cleaning the barrel between shots, and same shell but a different lot. But shooting say a 200 in the 10" and turning around and shooting a 180 definetly happens.

Wrong. My pattern dropped 40% from 2012 shells to 2013 shells. There is a reason why you see the older lot numbers being bought up.

Wads were different from 2012 to 2013 and I have the two of them to prove it.
