Older Remington 1100. What Choke and Load?

I've got a friend who is struggling to find a pattern he likes with an older 1100. It is a 3" model and was originally a fixed 30" barrel. He had the barrel cut off and threaded. He's tried an IC Pure Gold and Jellyhead with mag blends and hasn't really found a set up he likes (they've all been pretty thin patterns at 40). What choke / load would y'all recommend for him? Anybody got any experience with older 1100s?

Call William at SumToy and have him something made up.

Those older 1100s are very nice guns and most that I've seen over the years had very good concentric barrels. Do you know what length that barrel is now and what thread pattern was used when it was threaded?

So that I'm not making an assumption that may not be the case, has he patterned the gun with some "big paper" at least 3' x 3' at close range, maybe 25 yards, and then at 40 yards to make sure he's seeing the best pattern?

I'm always concerned when I hear about bad patterns from cut and threaded barrels. I've seen some with threads off just a bit that don't shoot to point of aim.

Thanks,
Clark

Like Clark said check POA/POI.  We have seen a few of the guns that they threaded off center when they did it.  If that is the case cut and redo.

Now I would look at something in 660 to 665 rang with Win Long Beard and HV 6's or 7's

Mag Blends I would drop to 650 rang.   :anim_25:

I have an older 3" 1100 magnum with the 30" full choke barrel on it,I wouldn't ever cut that barrel for no amount of money. That gun throws 3" #4's,5's and 6's with a vengence
it's not the harvest,it's the chase

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to ask him about the POI / POA thing today and see if he has shot it on larger paper or at closer range. Sumtoy, I also gave him your contact info so he may call you. I'll post up the info on barrel length and POI/POA when I hear back from him today.

Alright, I just talked back to him and I was wrong. He didn't have it cut off. He bought a new barrel for it and he said it's 26 or 28" but he couldn't remember. He also said that he shot it at 20 yards with different chokes last year and it is not a POI POA issue. I haven't gone to shoot with him yet, but I don't understand why he's not getting better results with the chokes he has tried and Mag Blends. Should he try some straight 6 or 7's?
