Choke Selection For Mossberg 835 question

In your guys opinion what is the best choke tube setup for and 835? What has worked best for you in the past and today? This is probably one of the most asked questions on here but if you could make a Top 3 what would they be?

The chokes that I use in my 835/935/SSi-One are the SSX and the Hevi-13 turkey chokes. They work exceptionally well and are available at reasonable prices. Many hunters/shooters swear by the Star Dot chokes in these guns, as you'll no doubt hear.

There are lots of 835 shooters out there and many combinations of chokes and shells will work with those guns. When you get it right, it's hard to beat.

Every gun is different. I used to shoot a JellyHead choke and loved it, until I tried a SSX my buddy had. I bought it from him and could ask for any better pattern. You will be hard pressed to find anything an 835 will not shoot pretty well. Even the factory choke that came in mine shot good enough that I would have no problem hunting with it.

Here's my experiences with 835/935

3.5" Hevi6s= JellyHead (didn't do well with MagBlends)

3.5" lead 4s= .670 Kicks (one dimensional as it's a lead only choke)

3.5 lead 5s&6s= Tru Glo SSX (150 #5s in a 10" circle at 40 yards why try anything else? It did the same exact thing with 6s)

It all depends on the size load and the shot size and type of shot - lead vs Hevi-13.  You will find that lead will tend to like a tighter choke using 6's and 5's and a little more open choke typically when using 4's.   

Hevi-13 3.5" 2.25oz #7's - Star Dot .676 - no other choke will beat it from my findings in 60 degree or warmer temp for consistency in 10" and 20" numbers.

Hevi-13 3.5" 2.25oz #6's - MAD Max .680 is going to be very tough to beat from what I have seen.

Lead 3.5" 2.25oz #6's Win XX - Star Dot .676 will be a great choice. 

The next best shooting choke for shooting the Hevi-13 3.5" 2.25oz #7's from what I have seen is the TruGlo SSX .670.

I have a TruGlo Bone Collector .670 that is said to shoot phenominally well.  But I haven't tested it yet.  I also have a Hevi-Shot Carlsons .676 choke that again is supposed to shoot very well with Hevi-13 loads.  But I have yet to test it. 

I have shot Pure Gold .670 and it shoots very good consistent even patterns with Hevi-13 3.5" 2.25oz #7's.  The same can be said for the Indian Creek BDS .675 shooting these same loads.  I think the Indian Creek is a better shooting choke than the Pure Gold .670.  Right around 300 shot in the 10" at 40yds.  The Jelly Head .690 with these same loads will do right around 270 in the 10". 

You will find that choke diameters in the .670 - .680  will give the most densest patterns with most loads in the Moss 835.  That has been my findings and the same can be said for most others on here who have shot the Moss 835 with a lot of various loads and chokes.

For affordability the Jelly Head can't be beat.  Good all around choke, mics. at .695 I believe.  Mine patterned Hevi 13 3.5" 7's very well, but I came across a Preston Pittman Bossbuster that is similar to the star dot so I returned the jelly head to Bass pro.  Otherwise I would still be hunting with it.

Guys I appreciate the input. I am in the workings on getting a StarDot, Jelly Head and SSX. That's where I'm going to start until I can afford to gather more up. I cant wait to start getting on the patterning boards.
