I'm new to the forum but I have a couple of questions and was hoping yall might be able to help me. I've been building calls for a couple of years... boxes, scratch boxes and troughs. Wondering if any of you put checkering on your boxes? I'd like to try to add some to my boxes and I ordered checkering tools from Midway. All the patterns I've seen on boxes look like they were done with a router. Does anyone have a good method for checkering? Lastly, I'd like to build a persimmon box and was seeing if anyone had a recommendation for the lid. Marlin Watkins has some fine sounding persimmon calls but I'm not sure if he's running some exotic wood paddle. I was gonna try persimmon and walnut to start. I'd like a nice hi front note to it. Again, never built one with persimmon and was hoping someone may have some suggestions.

I like your wood combination, but I'd prefer to have the box walnut and a persimmon lid. I have a persimmon striker that sounds great with all pot calls. Please give your idea a try and let us know how it works out. Good luck !

Don't they consider persimmon the American ebony???

I have short box calls made both ways. I have one made by Marlin that has a Persimmon lid and a green Poplar box and one made by Albert Paul that has a Maple lid and a Persimmon box. Both outstanding calls.

Here are 3 short boxes made by Albert Paul using persimmon.  Top notch calls....KILLERS.  You can't go wrong with Persimmon
