Hope this is the correct place to post this.  Shot my Remington 870 yesterday/23" barrel/3.5" Hevi #6s/Tru Glo-Gobble Stopper choke .665.  I shot at 12" targets but put a 10" circle over the pattern to count pellets.  Didn't count the pellets at 20 yds but almost all of the pattern was in the 12" circle.

Had 177 pellets in the 10" circle at 40 yds and 103 pellets in a 10" circle at 50 yds.  The patterns at 40 and 50 yds don't seem to be distributed evenly.

Should I be looking for a better combination or this a good hunting pattern?  Any tips for better combinations to try in my 870 if necessary.

Your results aren't too bad.. considering it's #6 shot.  I would try a JH .665 choke... would think you could get over 200.

Clean the barrel if you haven't already.

If you still aren't happy... just stop fighting it and switch to #7.  I got a lot of time behind that set up... I had the 11-87 with 23in -  was getting close to 280 at 40 yards with HEVI #7, 3.5in

I am no pro but I would hunt with that set up any day. I spent a year buying chokes, shells etc and also spent alot of money. I have learned one thing it seems as if you are never happy with pellet count and feel you can always do better which may be true, but I learned that your gun can shoot different numbers everytime you shoot and clean it, temp rain wind snow etc. I told myself that if my gun shoots good at least 100 pellets in a 10 inch at 40 yards im done messing with it. This is just my opinion. GOOD LUCK AND JUST HAVE FUN!!!!

(I killed my last 12 turkeys at distances no further than 25-30 yards)

amen  :agreed:

Those patterns are great I have 3 870's and your gonna spend a lot of money to beat those perfectly good patterns.

no expert here either . But ain't no turkey head going to get out that! Killed lots of gobblers with a lot less in the 10 than that.

Longshanks

Great patterns..I would stick with that if it were me.  Thats an awesome combo. I used to shoot the old Hevi 13 6's/ Clear Hulls out of a tru glo .665 when they first came out and the pattern was business. If you just want to see more shot on the paper you could shoot some Hevi 3.5 7's and see what it does but those Hevi 6's are devastating on the turkey. Good luck next season.

I've tested the same gun/barrel with the 6s using a .660 Jelly Head and the .662 Hevi-shot choke and got comparable results. So if you are getting those #s with that choke if leave it alone.

I'm no expert either, but I wouldn't waste any more of my time or money on shells & patterns.  I'd just enjoy turkey hunting with what you have.

Wingbone

That's about as good as you can get with that combo. You can play around with some other chokes but you probably wouldn't improve much if at all. Like the other guys said, you'd be wasting money if you did.

looks good to me my gun only does slightly better than that with a jellyhead 665 and hevi 3/2/7s
