Well since I tagged out so early I had to keep chasing those birds with other people to try to get someone else a bird. Friday I went with one guy and we saw and heard a few but no luck. Did hit the motherlode of morels though. On Saturday I went with one of my dad's coworkers to try and get his first spring turkey... He had only killed one hen in the fall. We also had a boat to do some fishing since this WMA also has fishing lakes.
We got a late start because his gun was malfunctioning. Finally got it working and headed to the woods with birds already gobbling good on the roost.
Walking through the woods we bumped a longbeard off the roost. Them bumped 2 or 3 more birds. A bit ticked off that I was too ambitious. But anyway, we spent the morning sitting, calling and listening and occasionally moving to a new tree and heard a few gobbles now and then.
Finally I hit the wingbone call and a hen came back at me. Called her into 15 yards and she busted us as expected.
Got up and moved through the woods more. Got another hen responding, seemed the birds responded better to the wingbone than the tube call. thought what the heck, let's call her in, wishful thinking maybe there's a gobbler behind. Well, the hen never had the chance to come in. I hit the wing bone call again and within a couple minutes I heard leaves rustling somewhat to the left. No way it was one of the million squirrels we saw, sounded like a turkey, but maybe another hunter.
I kept looking and slowly got my camera facing the right way and turned it on, but before I could start recording, a big red head appeared and I whispered "shoot him" and he did. Hunt was over at 10 am
Another one ran off that had been behind him. A nice public land jake, 15 lbs.
Fishing wasn't so great but found some morels and enjoyed the rest of the day.
