870/11-87/1100mag?

Alright guys I've got another question, seems like that's all I do on here is ask questions. Oh to start with from my driveway to work is an hour and fifteen minutes one way, so I have a lot of time to think. I have done a lot of reading on here about the 870, and 11-87 being wonderful turkey guns. What I don't see is a lot of folks talking about 1100s for turkey hunting. Now again I'm just asking this for my curiosity. Let's say you take a choke that has a real good reputation with Remington, #s for example " Jelly Head 660" or whatever choke has proved itself with an 870 - 1187. Now let's say you line up an 870, 11-87, and an 1100 mag, take the super mags out just 3" with a 28" barrel. Shouldn't you get pretty much the same results? Now I know some guns shoot better than others, always have been and always will be, as long as you're comparing apples to apples, but let's just say in general. I have seen some post about folks asking about an 1100, and folks would tell them just to save the money on doing all the work to the 1100, and buy a proven turkey gun "870-11-87". If you already own an 1100 mag wouldn't it still be cheaper to have the work performed on it than to buy an 11-87? Again y'all, the thought that keeps running through my mind is they are all three Remington barrels, so in my mind it should be the same. I'm asking this because I know there are a lot of folks on here who know way more about this than I do. Is there something special about the barrels in an 870 or 11-87, that's not there with an older model 1100mag? Yes it would be nice to have the option of a super mag 3.5", but also the way I look at it is there has been a many of birds fall victim to a 2 ¾" before 3" came along, so 3" should be fine.  When I talk about the work done on an 1100 here is the list of things I can think of for now. 1) Forcing cones lengthen, 2) barrel cut down to about 23"-24" and rethreaded, 3) I can polish the barrel myself or the smith that does the work can, at this point I'm just trying to get this figured out. Oh as of now she has a 28" threaded barrel. More guns is always a better thing, but getting the most out of what you already have is also equally as good in my mind. I haven't really checked the price of a new 11-87 but I would figure somewhere around $600-$800 range? You could have the work done on the 1100 and still have a good chunk of change left over.  I'm sorry to be so long winded, but this is something that has been on my mind here lately so I figured I would ask. Thank you for your time and help explaining.

There is no doubt that the 1100 would work just fine for a turkey gun. I personally wouldn't change it a bit if I was going to hunt turkeys with it. They don't make em any more and I couldn't bring myself to chop it up. But that just me. But yes, you can definetly kill with it. Heck ,2  3/4 inch shells will jelly a head up in no time.

Your 1100 mag should make a great turkey slayer, especially since its threaded for choke tubes so can try a few out and find one that works. I myself was thinking about taking my dads old 870 wingmaster turkey hunting someday. It has a 30" full choke barrel (trap gun), and with some winchester xx mag #6's it should be deadly.

Thanks guys. Oh the only reason I would cut the barrel down is because I bought the barrel from Cabelas. I still have the factory 30" fixed full choke sitting in the closet, no way I'd cut that baby up. Again thanks yall, I just dont ever hear of anyone talking about the 1100s so I didnt know if there was a reason or not.

Oh ok, gotcha. In that case...chop her up.  I think the only reason they aren't talked about much is because they aren't made anymore and the 870s and 11-87 are widely available and made in turkey gun models.

The Remington 1100 was and is a fine shotgun. They are very well made, soft shooting and reliable. I'd recommend that before you do anything to that gun, you "deep clean" the barrel and then take it to the range with a few shells to see just how well it shoots. You never really know what you have until you try it.

The 1100, 11-87 and 870 all have the same barrel inside diameters and take the same Rem-Choke threaded choke tubes. There are many commercially available chokes, with proven track records,  made by many companies that will work very well with your gun.

I would give that barrel a chance before doing anything to it. Sometimes, even work well done does not produce better results. It just results in more money spent.

A good turkey choke and some good shells may be all that you ever need to have a real winner.

Thanks,
Clark

Yes sir I need to deep clean and polish the barrel. I also need to start researching chokes and shells for the 870 and 11-87. Thanks again for yalls help. I plan on researching when I get home tonight, but if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to let me know. Thank you for your time and help.

I still hunt with my 1100 3" magnum quite often
that 30"full choke will flat out throw some lead :icon_thumright:
it's not the harvest,it's the chase

I had a 2 3/4" 1100 with a 26" Improved Cyl barrel cut down and threaded back in the mid 80's when I first heard of interchangeable chokes.  I used it for everything. Killed a bunch of turkeys with it.
Then I got to reading that you need a 3" gun for turkey hunting...and fell for it. I traded that gun off and have kicked myself in the butt ever since.

If it is 3 inch and threaded for chokes , that's all you will need to make it a solid turkey gun --

Get yourself a good choke and some quality ammo - sight it in for point of aim , clean the barrel out with a solvent and brush , dry it out , and let her rip !

If it shoots fine , and you like the way it handles and shoulders - all you will need is a few accessories if you find it necessary - like a sling and camo tape to get you by

many hunters think that you need a short barrel to make a shotgun a good turkey gun , shoulder the gun yourself and you be the judge , a long sighting plane has a pointing advantage for some folks , you might be one of them

good luck --Shannon
