Federals with the FCW in the guns I've patterned have shot best with a full or modified choke.
I have a 20 gauge and I ended up buying a kicks choke tube for it. But I don't use federals in it either. Remingtons and winchesters shot best in it with the kicks. I also don't clean mine every shot. That is just mine though. I don't use it, but have it for some future kids who want to go, HOPEFULLY. Hope this helps. Everyone has some good ideas and try them all. It is cheaper to fix what you have than to buy a new one. I don't remember the exact numbers I got for the pattern, but it was sufficient out to 35 yards, but 40-I'm not so sure. It opened up a good bit. I should try the hevi shot sometime, but like you have found, things get expensive!!
