My son is 8 years old and has a youth Mossberg 20 gauge.  Think he was 6 going in 7 when he shot it for the first time and handles it well.  He's a big kid.  Have gotten close, but no turkey yet.  Hope to this spring.  Good luck to y'all!!!

Best of luck to you, I know how you feel. Nothing like sharing an experience with a kid getting his first turkey!! I have had the pleasure of calling for my  son and my nephew on their first birds. Unexplainable joy, and I was tore up more with them than any bird I have harvested in my 35yrs of chasing ole Tom.

Awesome!!!!  My 6 yr old killed his first 2 last season. Had a guy come 800 yards across a clearcut to us and ask if we were injured. No sir, just a grown man yelling and screaming like a school girl!!!  Your little buddy will never forget you taking the time to take him so young.

do these little small size boys handle shooting a 410 or 20ga pretty well in yall's experience?  I dont wanna start mine too early and afraid the recoil may startle him and scare him doing more harm than good for the cause..  Thoughts?

My sn is a shrimp.  He didn't enjoy shooting the 410 and every time I practiced with him he only shot it twice.  He practiced with bb guns and balloons the size of gobblers heads in the garage.  We watched turkey hunting DVDs and he had a nerd gun behind his fort and when I said kill em he shot the tv.  I killed three birds with him before he had a gun in his hands.  It's all about fun, when he practiced I put 9 shot in the gun to get as least amount of recoil as I could.  I could only pattern his gun to 15 yards with 4 types of ammo

We practice with the target loads to lighten the kick a little.   The 20 gauge packs a punch, but my son is fine with it.  I think the key is that each kid is different.  Some are ready at 6 and some aren't until 10 or later.  I also let mine shoot fun stuff like an old pumpkin or old jake decoy.  I think it helps them focus on what they are shooting and not so much the shot.
