Mossberg 835

I have a Mossberg 835 with the 28" barrel. I only have a Primos Tight Wad .690 choke. I have tried some different shells and even a Carlson .675 choke. I just cant seem to find something that will get me to 200 pellets in a 10 inch circle. Does anyone have any suggestions? I think the 28" barrel is for waterfowl, and may be really messing me up.

The longer barrel usually patterns better than shorter ones.  Unless there is a problem with the barrel that is not it.  You told us about what chokes you have tried but what sells?  Also how do you pattern?  How big is the paper you are shooting at?

I have tried

Federal Flight 3 1/2" #5's 2oz.
Federal Flight 3" #6 2oz.

tried these in both chokes....best I did was 180 in a 10" circle with the .690 using the #5's above....

What I do is draw a 10" circle....then in the middle, draw a 1 1/2" circle to aim at.....the 180 was actually shot at 35 yards...

If you have haven't done it yet there is a tutorial on Barrel Polishing and deep cleaning listed at the top of this Turkey Gun section.  That will help you get better patterns in most cases.

What Mr. Honcho said will help.  Are you sure your point of aim is your point of impact?  The way most guys pattern is take a large piece of paper and shoot at the middle of the paper.  After you fire you look for the most dense section of the pattern and then draw a 10" circle around it and count.  You may need a sight to adjust the poa with poi.  If you got 180 in the 10" and it was even with no major holes you are ready to rock and roll at 35, just depends on 40 yards and hard to know without shooting it.  Most do not care for the feds in the 12 ga with the fcw.

Yes...I have sighted it in. I use an adjustable set of Williams sights. Im dead on bullseye at 15 yards. This gun is new, so I doubt it needs polishing or cleaning. I really dont know which direction to go. Choke or shells or both?

180 w/5s nice even pattern. Not to shabby, if ya ask me. Good nuff to kill a turkey for sure.

My 835 has a 24" barrel and I have a star dot .676 that I use in it with hevi 3.5" 2.25 oz 6s. I recently picked up a mad max .695 that I shot mag blends through and hevi 7s for giggles, both 3.5" 2.25 oz.

I am happy with all the patterns and would hunt with any of them, but star dot with hevi 6s are my number one choice.

I went back and readjusted my 10" circle and was able to encompass about 210 pellets by shifting my circle a couple of inches. I am satisfied with that.
