) Steve's Strategies, turkey time blind sets. During both spring and fall, I like to set my blinds on the edges of timber and open fields as early as possible. I want the birds to get use to them. Often they will roost very close. They just seem to prefer to fly down into open areas, such as pastures, rather than woods or brush. Often birds will wing great distances to a preferred landing zone. I will set up my decoys so they can see them both from the roost and across the open fields. Birds landing right in the decoys are not uncommon. I also like to have a blind or two set up in my food plots for the late morning hunts. Occasionally I find a blind location that is ideal for both deer and turkeys, such as a wood's line scrape. Those spots require, deserve, extra attention and scrutiny. Steve's Strategies – Long Term Sites: When setting a ground blind for the long term I scout to find a level area close to a travel, funnel, or ambush site. I clear rake and trim any ground vegetation. Then, I'll take a shovel and level out the area as needed; sloped, uneven floors have ruined many a good hunt. I'll put down a scrap carpet trimmed to the size of the blind; including the scent flap. Using the stakes that come with the blind I securely stake it down. This helps to keep out unwelcome critters. Next I anchor screw in type stakes, made for pet leads, that you can buy at the local home center. I tie security ropes from these stakes all four hubs. This is the most secure way I've found to avoid any wind slap on windy days and from having to pick your blind up on the neighbor's property after a good wind storm.
