I'm gathering up all my components to build a pc and would like to run it by someone to see if it will be as good as I think. It will be mostly just a home computer but plan on getting a good highend hd camcorder by march 1st so need one that will be able to handle the editing.

I would suggest a quad core processor if your going to edit and render  HD video.  It will cut your time in half.

Ok heres what I have so far. I haven't picked a gpu cause I'm not sure i even need one since I'm not going to be playing games tho I have read that some editing software utilizes it. My power supply is prob overkill to unless I run a gpu. Software I'm undecided. Thinking about powerdirector 11. I'm just going to be doing basic editing so if you have a better recommendation on anything let me know. Just want to make sure I have enough oooomph lol

That's pretty much an updated version of the rig I put together a year ago except I stuck a GTX580 and a 1000W power supply in mine because I like to do a little gaming in addition to more serious work like photo and video editing. I'd suggest sticking an aftermarket heatsink on the CPU though if you weren't already planning to.

Lots of folks use Windows Moviemaker software for editing. For purchased software, I like Sony Vegas.

Your setup will more than handle it. I have the exact same RAM setup, the P8Z68-V PRO motherboard, and an i7 2600K Sandy Bridge CPU @ 3.4 GHz. My system hasn't even broken a sweat yet with anything I've thrown at it. My video editing is more of a hobby, but I shoot still images professionally and the system chews through RAW files from my Canon 1DsIII with no problem. Same for video files from my HF-G10, but again I'm doing pretty basic stuff with the video. I like Vegas Movie Studio for video editing, but that's really just personal preference.

I'm not convinced you will need a GPU, but I've had the GTX580 in mine from the start so I can't say for sure. I've heard varying reports from people on the issue, but unless you are using software that will utilize the GPU then you aren't really getting anything from it. You could always try building the system first and then add a GPU later if you think you need it. Even if you do decide to get one I doubt you would need more than a 400 or maybe a 500 series which can be had pretty reasonably these days.

It is all a degree of convenience, enjoyment and protection. I was processing HD video years ago on a basic home pc and it worked just fine. I now have a custom rig I built myself and I love it! It does all of the same things my old unit did, it just does them all better, faster, and it is backed up much more securely. The storage is one of the most expensive things. What you have there (2TB) will fill up before too long and you will need to back it all up. I went ahead and built a 6TB internal drive array and have a mirrored external array for redundancy. I already had to use the backup only two months after I built it. I accidentally wiped out the BIOS and had to reformat the storage, wiping out all of my data. Fortunately it was all backed up so it didn't take any time at all! Keep that in mind as you will have all of your projects, precious footage, pictures, etc. on a hard drive that could fail at any time, or all be wiped out with a single lightning strike. The GPU will help make your projects look better as you are working on them, but don't affect your final project. Only what you view on your PC. Also make sure you get a program that will allow you to burn Blu-ray discs. No sense acquiring all of that beautiful HD video and them compressing it to display on a DVD. Good luck to you!

I'm going with blu ray I just forgot to add it to my list lol. I'm so ready to get this going. I've been using the same comp for the past 10 years. It's an old IBM with like 512gb of memory and I'm pretty sure there's a mouse in there on a wheel that runs my CPU lol. Plus it still has the usb 1.0 ports
