The Flitecontrol Wad is a very interesting product. I worked with Rochelle Poore, the design engineer at Federal on that project, in 2004 and 2005. We fired hundreds and hundreds of shells and tried a number of different choke configurations at that time to find one that would allow the wad to open and function consistently. We finally found that configuration to be a non-ported choke with a .670-.675 exit diameter. There were other "internals" that also effected it but those were the 2 main considerations.
The first work was done with 12 gauge 3" shells with #6 shot. When the #7 shot shell was introduced, a lot of things changed. We found that you may get much better results by defeating the intended purpose of the wad and put it through a non-ported choke with an e.d. of .650, when you use that #7 shot load.
Allowing the wad to function properly and getting good patterns were sometimes 2 entirely different things.
We did not note any difference in actual performance between ported and non-ported barrels. It may well be that the wad is effected in some way, slowing it, etc. but as far as patterns were concerned, we saw no differences.
We also did not see much difference in patterns in guns with different barrel lengths with shells using this wad. There were differences in MV and TV I'm sure but patterns did not change to any noticeable degree.
