I need some new calls

Looking to get a couple new calls this winter, looking for a few suggestions.

I've never had any of the "nicer" calls, and am looking to take a step up in quality.

Mainly looking for pots here, I have a few mouth calls I like, and I've never been able to get a sound I like out of box calls.

I've got a Cane Creek AL pot that I love, but I have a lot of trouble getting any sound out of it if it gets damp at all.

I'm thinking maybe a nice copper and a quality glass pot, but don't really know where to start.

Just looking for some suggestions as to what's fairly easy to use, decent sound, and versatile.  Custom or off the shelf, doesn't matter.

Mike yingling makes a nice pot call, he's here on the site. Hollaran pots are great too. Check out lights out calls also. You've come to the right place if looking for quality turkey calls.

I second Mike Yingling for his pots.  He made me a Bronzed Glass over glass that sounds incredible. 

No matter what you are looking for, I would recommend you check out the classifieds here on Ole Gobbler.  The guys that build and advertise here, make quality calls and stand behind their work.

You're in the wright place too get a really good custom call , There's a lot of GOOD makers hear, And ya gon'a  get a real good quality call for the money ,on what you choose to get , If ya looking for a "ceramic " call
you can get a nice-one from Stumpy , That's all Turkey.

I am fairly new to the custom call scene and I can tell you there is absolutely no comparison to store bought. Its a very hard decision to narrow down which call maker to go with especially if your only getting one. I went with pappy on my first one just because of a recommendation from a friend and I was 100% satisfied. The only part that sucks is I have to wait til spring to try it out, I know my wife is tired of hearing me run it in the house trying to get her to gobble.

I have a bunch of quality custom pots by different guys. I have sound files on the sound file section of this board. That page also has videos from others from calls  I don't own. I'd suggest you spend some time listening to some videos and see if you hear what you are looking for. It's a great tool and an easy way not to waste your money.

When you get into buying custom calls...sometimes just because it looks good, doesn't mean it sounds good and everyone ears are different when it comes to what they like in a turkey call.  If I'm spending 45 to 65 bucks on a pot, I want it to run like a Lamborghini not a Volkswagen beetle.


I agree with Stumpy, since you have an aluminum, a good ceramic or crystal is tough to beat. I find copper, very hard to master. I've run a few and two of the best I've run we're made by trkyhtr and ccleroy off of this board. Again though, I find copper to be the toughest and most inconsistent to run.

There are several good call makers out there, I would highly recommend taking a look at Lonzo's custom calls.

I'm new to turkey hunting, but I picked up a couple pot calls here from Mike Yingling; and I've been very impressed with them.  One was a slate over glass pot and the other was for my dad; a copper over glass pot.  Both are very easy to use.  I like the size of Mike's calls; they're a little smaller than others I've seen.  He also makes very nice strikers.  His prices are also very good. 

I also picked up a couple David Halloran pots.  I have a Double Glass and a Twisted Sister.  Both are easy to use and both sound good IMO.  Both are loud.  Though it's kinda pricey; I really like the sound of the Twisted Sister.

I also recently picked up a long box call from Mike Crooks of Spring Creek Turkey Calls.  It's a purple heard over cedar box.  It set me back $50 and I couldn't be happier with it.  I have one other box call, twice the price; and I truly think Mike's sounds better.  Really easy to use.

Again, I'm new at this.  If they're easy for me to use and I can make turkey sounds with them; anyone can.
