A few months ago I started a search to get my 12 year old cousin a commemorative call for his first turkey. Brendan was diagnosed with kidney cancer when he was 10 and fought like a champ to beat it. After posting on here looking for a call maker I recieved a number of offers but Bill's stuck out as he identified with Brendans illness and was excited to make him a call. I hunted with Brendan for 5 days in GA this year and although we had some extremely close calls, I was unable to get him his first turkey. 3 weeks after I left and was back in MO, still feeling bad about not being able to put him on a bird, he called me to let me know that he called in two gobblers with the slate call I got him for Christmas last year and shot one at 15 yards. I could not have been happier. After a few conversations with Bill Crowell regarding the call and turkey hunting in general, Bill started work on Brendan's call. I received the call last Friday and I am floored at how great it turned out. Brendan will be in town next week and I am extremely excited to get him the call. Bill also threw in 2 strikers and a custom crow call for Brendan, as well as a few strikers for myself to use on my ceramic call and they sound great.  After talking with Bill we found out that we know some of the same people from duckhunting in SEMO and we actually killed our first turkeys within 5 miles of eachother. Thanks again Bill and I'll make sure to keep in touch and relay Brendans reaction to the call. The pics aren't the greatest as I just snapped a few with my cell phone this morning. I can't wait to see his face as he is not expecting this.  :icon_thumright:

Jeff,

Thanks for the comments.  I hope Brendan enjoys the calls and harvests many more birds.  The turkey call and one of the strikers was made from a piece of Kentucky hard maple with some sapwood streaks.  The wood is probably the best looking hard maple I have ever seen.  The call/striker combination produced a medium high, raspy, pitch sound. The laminated striker is slightly higher pitched and is one of my favorite.

Thanks again for the opportunity to make the call for Brendan. Being a cancer survivor, I can identify with what he is experiencing.   My thoughts and prayers are with Brendan and you.  Thanks again and keep in touch.
