Finally got the "go ahead"
June 29, 2012, 11:49:28 AM
Well, Mama says I can get the lathe now (Delta 46-460), sooooo...
I'm thinking perhaps I should get a chuck too right away and I will
need a couple of basic turning tools as well, right? So guys help
me out here before she wakes up..
What chuck do you recommend ie; turning pots, tubes etc..
What tools to start out with..
I have been researching and takin notes for awhile now, waiting for this
day to come, but just reaching out again...
Thanks everyone

For the money, you can't go wrong with the Grizzly HSS Midi sized gouge set. Seems like there are 6 gouges for about $50.

be carefull how you let these guys spend your money, the barracuda II is a great chuck, the hand tools, man thats like trying to find the best nail in the box. just because a tool cost 50 to 100 dollars doesent make it better than a good set for 50 to 100 dollars. wendel at lights out recomended the grissly set to me last year i got it and love it. you can do most anything with it. yes you will want some special tools shop around. one tool you will need is a tool to keep your tools sharp which will make for good safe turning.

Thanks Stone Road, Yep, I kinda know what you are saying. It's like my son that sells wine says " good wine doesn't have to be expensive". I'm banking on my sharpening equipment that I have for my carving addiction ie; 8" paper and grit wheel, along with the slow speed power strop mandrel setup, and the buffing wheels and compounds, and then theres all the different wet stones etc.. I do know the value of sharp tools, but thanks so much for bringing that up. Again, the advice is most appreciated as I also know you guys have been doing this a long time..

Of all of the turning tools that I have, my go to tools for turning calls are the 5 piece "mini set from woodcraft:

as well as my carbide tool that I got from sanatorium on here. The set from w/c is $50, but once a year or so they have a 1/2 off sale on them.

Hey, thanks Gitzit, I'll check it out. By the way, made a big score on Craigs last Sat. Picked up a just like new Jet 17MF drill press with a dozen HSS bits for 350.00. The guy was 77 yrs young and was getting out of woodworking. Had a dozen or so 1/2 and 3/4" pipe clamps too, that he sold me for 25.00.
Oh yeah...

I bought a factory re-cond supernova 2 from tekna tool, I think it was $100 with a worm screw and 1yr warranty. Also just ordered the psi midi set they look like they would be the perfect size for turning pots and strikers I believe they are m2 hss. Couldn't find the grizzly set wendel mentioned

I bought the Nova G3 and love it. I caught the set on sale with 4 sets of jaws for like $189 if I remember correctly. Here is a link to it:
