I guess that all depends on you as far as what sounds you want it to have. Some folks like more of a high pitch sound wile others like a lower pitch sound, still others like a sound somewhere in between, kind of medium pitch. Some folks like a lot of rasp, others little to no rasp. If you are asking because you want to make calls to sell, go with what sounds good to you at first. Give calls out to friends and acquaintances, donate calls, etc. Get some videos or soundfiles of the calls up on the net and ask for feed back. If you are asking because you are wanting to purchase calls I feel you should be able to hit up any call maker on here and get a good sounding, well made call that the maker will stand behind.

I would love to make calls but I have no idea where to start. I'm asking for when I buy I have a few custom calls and had great talks with call makers but when I think about the sound I want I can't really explain it I know what I want in my head just can't really seem to tell you how I want it. I was just wondering what others tell call makers or how call makers explain how the calls sound. Thanks guys

Most, if not all callmakers, would love to talk to potential customers on the phone. We could play a few calls for you and see if we could find that sound you prefer
Pray as if everything depends on God, work like everything depends on you

That is really a great question.

Just look at the variety and types of callers. Then how the call makers "voice" each type. Some are looking for a fast roll over into a raspy yelp. Some want one to call soft for example. There are high pitched, low, nasal, cource, clear and some that have a particular "attitude" when playing. Anywhere from angry, sexy, pleading, demanding, content to screaming.

This all has to do with the range of sounds Turkeys make and what situation they make certain calls. Be it a young hen, old hen, jake or gobbler and gobbling. Those for Spring and Fall.

One call or even 2 may not be the best in a particular situation or hunt. For example, if you are fall hunting that Old Raspy Hen will not be the best choice if you busted young hens and jakes. So you might be looking for a call with great Kee Kees and young hen yelps and clucks. A Jake caller or maybe one that will do a deep Gobbler Cluck?

In the spring you might want a deep clear tone one day and a loud screaming call the next. It's not really what materials are used to make a particular caller....... but what "sounds" those callers make.

As mentioned. This is all up to you and what you want or feel you need to expand your collection of hunting callers.

Last so you understand what direction you might go is just look at box callers. A 2 sided box  like the one Albert Paul makes will not sound like the Turpin/Latham box Billy Buice makes. The Turpin Hen box ( with handle) has a different sound than a long box or a scratch box. While they all sound like a Turkey.... they all have a "sound" and are used in situations you find yourself in while hunting.
