No shooting, calling them in, hard gobbling action here but does contain some good turkey "talking" while on the roost. Think of it as an "Instructional Clip".  :icon_thumright:

Sounds like they were alarmed. Did they happen to see you or something spook them?

That would be an understatement.  :TooFunny:

I had a guy with me on his first turkey hunt, who when the first bird started gobbling took off towards his roost tree. After having a chat afterwards, he was under the impression that when they gobbled you hurry to their area and set up to catch them on flydown. That is what his buddies at work had told him anyways.

We're on the same page now.  :icon_thumright:

I agree that this video is a good example of how turkeys react when they are alarmed about something, but are not quite alarmed enough to take evasive action.  I refer to that sound as "concerned clucking/putting".  Those birds have seen something they don't like and are letting each other know that they all need to be aware.
For beginning hunters, you certainly don't want to tree call to turkeys using that sound in an early morning roost hunt.  It is not the sound of a contented bird that is just waking up normally.  ....And if you hunt roosted birds that are making that kind of sound, you can be pretty much assured that they have seen something that they don't like.

Well put, and phrased much better than I could have! Thanks!

You are right, FireDoc,....this is a really good instructional tool.   ...Shows hunters the kinds of sounds they can expect to hear from "concerned" birds.  Thanks for putting it up!

I always tell beginning hunters that if they start hearing those sounds from turkeys they are calling in, they had better get ready to shoot if there is an opportunity because those birds are likely to be leaving soon!....

My thoughts exactly.
