Late season birds???

Teach me every thing I need to know about killing late season birds.  I am guessing the hens are on the nest here in WI.  I have only seen a handful of hens in the last few weeks.  The toms gobble on the limb then shut up when they hit the ground.  Do I need to just keep calling and walking hoping one fires up or comes in quiet?  I am done with male decoys for the year.  All info is welcome.

Run and gun works great but also try hitting the field late afternoons.  Hens out feeding toms not to far away. I shot 1 Weds. night and my son shot 1 tonight. Both taken after 6:30 pm.  Good luck

I agree run and gun.  Find the birds and get out in front of them.  Or scout them and find out where they are coming to a food source, etc and wait them out.

Mid to late season is my favorite time to hunt them in SW MS. I find they respond better to calling and the hens are less of a problem. Unlike the the prior posts I tend to run and gun less. If I can find a bird gobbling on the roost I'll set up and call once he's on the ground. If he responds, I'll stay put for hours calling every few minutes whether he responding or not as long as he respond the first few times. Just like any other time of the year Patience and knowledge of your birds will kill more than anything else.
I kinda treat the whole day like an afternoon hunt. Don't leave a bird to find a bird. If he gets henned up it won't be to long and he will come looking for you. I will deke out more late season than early season, but this year I had a few problems with my decoy set ups and didn't use the jake much late season.

I filled my wis. fourth season tag last monday afternoon at 4 oclock the tom strutted all the way in to a dsd jake and hen decoy. On weds. morning the start of wis. fifth season I had four or five toms gobbling up a storm within 300 yards. I had three toms come in together and I shot the biggest one. I didn't have the decoys out this time but I think that they would have worked well. I saw a group of three toms and a jake traveling together in a field fri. morning. I don't know what that means seeing these toms grouped up but they sure seemed interested in my calling last wed.I will be using the decoys this weds. when the wis. sixth season starts. I think the toms are still looking for some action.  Good luck this week.
