Been hunting VA all week and have managed to hear only 2 birds that are together.  I may hear them one day and then not for 2 days.  I have tried to talk to them but they do not seem interested (I have seen no hens).  I feel like I am fall hunting, just sitting around in the woods.  I think it is basically over.  What do you other VA hunters think or are you having a good time?  I hunt the GW forest west of Woodstock, VA.

jim,
I hope things are getting better for you :). Youth day & the first day of the season the birds were gobbling a lot in my area. The next Monday they were not gobbling much nor were they gobbling much on Saturday. I do know the 3 birds I hear had hens with them when I saw them later in the morning. I hunt in the South Eastern part of the state.

It would be interesting what others are hearing at this point.

Will be out tomorrow morning, looking forward to setting my eyes on a nice tom!

I'm a couple clicks north of you in PA, and i can tell you it's far from over here. Most gobblers are still with hens, gobbling activity is decent, and i've seen no sign of incubation yet, hens are still laying, still roosting in trees, and still hanging with the gobblers till late morning. The current crappy weather prob has them shut down more than anything else.
That ol' tom's already dead. He just don't know it yet .... The hard part is convincing him.

Are you REALLY working that gobbler, or is HE working YOU?

I replied in the wrong thread (Done Breeding Thread).  Long story short... still no birds gobbling at one of my favorite places in Jefferson Co,. WV.

Things are really slow this year.  Seeing a fair number of single birds and not many groups at all.  Very light gobbling, some mornings none.  I did take a nice 22 pound bird with a 11.5 inch beard this morning.  However, it was the second property I hunted this morning and the only bird I heard.  He gobbled several times at my aggressive cackle and then came in silent.  Considering the slow year, I feel pretty lucky.  I have been out every morning but two since the season started.

Well fellas I have been at it for almost a week now in WV and still no birds heard.  When in WV (Jefferson Co.) last week I heard a hen and she came to my calling with no one in tow.  It appears that all my old hot spots are in WV and VA are bare.  I'll keep trying.

I went out this morning in a different part of the county, and I heard several gobblers.  One gobbled over 250 times, but he was stuck on posted property and not budging.  This week has been much better than the beginning of the season.

I've been hunting a few days East of you near Fort Valley and one day at Thompson WMA.  Have only seen two hens and not one gobble even heard.

Last year was great,  but this year has been tough.

vtmchunter,
Are you hunting in Jefferson Co., WV?
