Who else is from or hunts Ct here. I know there's a couple at least. Here on the shoreline, the bird population is down from in the past, I know the state is predicting a good season but it will not be anything like in the past. I have more private land this year than before but am less hopeful. 5-10 or 15 years ago I would see birds in my daily travels, get calls for nuisance birds, hear gobbling all over the place.
Ct is different than some of the other states on here. We usually can't run and gun, so to speak. If there are birds near your area you should be good but if not, your outta luck.
Last year was horrible, you couldn't buy a gobble.
I know the past spring weather has hurt them a little but also think the damn fisher cat is largely responsible for poult and young turkey mortality. Right when the fisher seemed to be peaking in the state the turkey population seemed to be declining. Heavy predator pressure also leads to less gobbling and yelping once the birds see one of their own get ambushed. We yelped up a Coyote 2 years ago.
I don't think the inland areas have suffered as much.
I don't believe the weather being warm will hurt us as I think the the photo period has a lot more to do with breeding and gobbling than anything else.
I have private land in Madison, North Madison, Killingworth x2, Lyme x2 and Clinton
Good Luck to you all.
Lets hear from you if your hunting in CT. What do you think?
