I have been slaying toms for 17 years or at least a trying to. I recently bought a browning maxus 26 in barrel and am shooting 3.5. I have tried to shoot heavy shot magnum blend, heavy 13 #5 and Remington turkey loads #6 out of it with a heavy shot turkey choke. I could not be more upset at the results at 40 yd. Its a joke! for some reason it patterns way left, like 6 to 7 inches left. Is there any hunters out there that use a browning Maxus? if so what choke and shell work for you. PLEASE HELP! I'm starting to wonder if I should not of sold my old 11-87 super mag!!!! I'm wanting a winning combination.

Point of Impact(POI) can be affected by several things.  Different loads often have different POIs and different chokes also have different POIs.  It's alway best to find the load that gives the pattern you like, zero for that load/choke combo, and only hunt with that combo.  Sometimes you will find several loads that share the same point of impact, but it should always be tested on paper prior to hunting.  Many people think "This is a shotgun, it will shoot any shell or choke where I have the bead pointed.." but that is far from the truth.

1st of all I would suggest to shoot your gun at large pieces of paper. 3' x 3' works well.  You can buy rolls of contractor paper at Home Depot, Lowes, or many hardware stores in the painting section.  The rolls I buy are 35" wide and 140ft long.  Place a dot in the center of the paper and shoot each load and choke at 40yds.  After the shot, draw a 10" circle around the most dense portion of the pattern and count the number of hits in that circle.  You want at least 100 evenly dispersed hits in that circle at your maximum range.  That may be well beyond 40yds with some loads, but 40yds is a great distance to find what patterns best.

Once you find the load and choke that patterns the way you want, shoot it again a few times to make sure the pattern numbers stay where you want them and also to see where that 10" core is in relation to your point of aim.  You may very well need adjustable sights if you are just using the bead now.

After you find the patterns you want and get your gun zeroed, it's good to find the max distance you can consistantly place 100 hits in the 10" circle. Just remember that 100 hits consistently on a ccalm warm day is much different than a cold or windy day, so you shouldnt attempt a shot that far under bad conditions.

If you are looking for a different choke to try in your Inv+ gun, you may want to try a Primos Jelly Head .670. That choke has proven to work well for me in Inv+ guns with both lead and HTL loads.

i would talk to Sumtoy, if memory serves me correct he posted some great patterns out of a maxus with one of his chokes a while back, he will work with you to get that gun shooting great numbers

I am shooting a Maxus with a 28" barrel and a Jellyhead choke. I am getting right around 100 in the 10 @ 40 yds shooting Winchester High Velocity turkey loads 3.5" 2oz 6 shot. I am new to the pattern game so I never shot at a large piece of paper to see where the densest part of my pattern is.

On another note I wanted a dedicated turkey gun so I just bought a Remington SPS SM ShurShot. I will be checking the lead pattern on my new gun soon and will bring my Maxus along and see where it is shooting also.

cast off shim?  Put one on my Maxus and I now shoot dead on.

Yes read up on the shims and do some swapping out. It will change your POI !!! In mine I changed mine and it shoots spot---on!!! Love it!!!
I shoot a pure gold 670 with Hevi 7s excellent numbers!!!
Blessed are the peacemakers for they are the children of God.

Hey there, i just wanted to chime in and tell you that i own a browning maxus 28" and am using 3.5' as well. I noticed of the bat when trying out different shells that my POI was off in different directions as well. First thing i did which was drastic was went and had my gun drilled and tapped and then mounted a nice eotec on top. You can you w/e you would like but it made a world of difference once i started shooting at big paper. Now for my experience with the gun i have tried an indian creek, a pure gold ported and non ported and i have a carlsons. the restrictions i cant remember off the top of my head being at work but i tried each of those chokes with several different shells such as Kents ultamates, winchester supremes, hevi 13's, federal heavy weight, remington nitros, and some basic federals. i found that my gun likes the non ported chokes better in general and suprisingly it shot best with the kents. all loads were size 5. i have shot some 6 and 7 shot from heavy weight and heavy shot with a better count but obviously more pellets in those loads. Hope this info helps as a starting point for you. Best of luck and keep me posted on your results!

I shoot a 3.5 Maxus, but with 3 in Hevi 13 2 oz 6 and it's amazing...I use a Truglo Strut Stopper tube...I've shot it with 3 in Winchester HV 5s and it was pretty good too.
