I'm glad you asked.

You are considered a veteran when you know the answers below.

Calling too loud only applies to those non veterans who do not sound like a turkey. If you sound like a turkey, you are not calling too loud. If you don't sound like a turkey, and there is any chance a turkey may hear you, you are calling too loud. It is what veterans tell beginners because it is rude to say your calling stinks, be quiet and he may walk by you!

Close enough is when the gobbler can hear your softest clucks and purrs. Too close is when you can hear him putting as he flies off. Again, this is intuitively obvious to veterans.

What to say? I am Carrie Underwood's cougarriffic slutty sister. In turkey language this sounds just like the squealing hen. When to say it? Obviously, you want to communicate this info when you are close enough but not too close.

You simply can NOT find this kind of entertainment on TV or anywhere else for that matter.
Blessed are the peacemakers for they are the children of God.

Ok, red pill day.

I hear all kinds of terms thrown out there that confuse me.   Here are a couple.  Answer any and all that you can.

Veteran - At what point is one considered a veteran?  Is it the number of years of experience, kills, hunts or what?

Don't call to loud - Whats considered to loud.

Get close but not to close - Whats close enough and whats to close?

You have to know what to say and when to say it - What do you say and when?

Ok, I'm done until I get these figured out.
You need to call Kenny Rogers and have him sing you a song.

...and what size shot would that be?  6's or 7's?   :D

6's, but that's leading into my next question.

The guys I've asked who have forgotten more than I'll ever know about hunting turkeys always told me that until you've worked a few turkeys in...until you've had experience finding out what really reels a gobbler in...be subtle. Find a place where turkeys go, call just enough to let the turkey know where you're at, and just stay put and shut up.
I got that advice years ago and more or less still use it because I hunt on public land. I like the old school, less is more approach, but that's just my way. Others may have better success rattling off like in a calling contest or whatever.
Soft talk is what I hear real turkeys do where I hunt, though.
