Just wondering if they really make a did fence in recoil or more for looks/marketing

I shot both today but couldn't really tell a difference but I was shooting from a lead sled.

You'll get several opinions on this but in my experience,  ports work to help pull a wad from the shot charge as a part of the internal design or may be there for marketing alone. In either case, any reduction in recoil is negligible.

Pressure developed by a shotshell is significantly lower than a rifle... especially at the muzzle where pressure is at it's lowest.

As Clark said, ported chokes work by stripping the wad from the shot column.    Any reduction in recoil is miniscule, and likely not detectable by the individual shooter.     I have several chokes ranging from .650" to .670" and I can say the chokes E.D. has a more profound effect on recoil than the presence or absence of ports.

I will admit though, that ported chokes look nicer than their non-ported counterparts.

I shoot a 3.5" 11-87 and from a factory rem choke to a remington ventilator ported choke the recoil difference was enormous! Any chance of a second shot would be tough without the ported choke!

No difference in felt recoil in any if my 5 turkey guns. But where the difference is, slowing the wad down, will help your pattern.

i have 2 turkey guns
one is a remington super mag with factory turkey choke,,,,,the other is a mossberg 835 ulti mag, and its ported barrel and ported kicks choke,

now as for recoil the 835 has more being ported but when you shoot both at 40 yards the wad from 870 is about 3/4 way to the target and the 835 is dropped about 15 yards from gun,,,,,,
