Every time this comes up I just sigh and shake my head. There is no reason you should not take your turkey gun on the plane with you as checked baggage. After you have an airline in mind take the time to bring up their CONTRACT OF CARRIAGE and baggage policies. Both will be on their web site. All your questions should then be answered. I normally fly twice yearly from Tampa or Ft. Myers Florida to Columbus Ohio with my 870 (spring turkey/fall turkey). I have never had a problem. Arrive at the airport about 15 minutes earlier than recommended. Tell the ticket agent "I am checking an unloaded sporting firearm". Point to your locked airline approved gun case. They will take it from there and instruct you what to do next. You will be instructed to unlock the case at some point. You never EVER handle the firearm at any time during this process. Carrying ammo (despite what you read on these forums) can be airline specific as to number of rounds, weight, location etc. It will also be written in the baggage policies. Good luck.
