Remington Ext Ported choke

I have a Rem. 12 ga. Extended Ported choke that measures .655". It says "lead shot only". I was wanting to try some #7 Fed. Heavyweight or #7 Hevie through it. The choke measures 4" total with 2" extending out the muzzle. It has several rows of holes for porting around it. Has anyone shot HTL through this choke and if so, what kind of patterns did you get?

Do NOT shoot HTL  thru that choke. It was designed for LEAD ONLY! You may damage your barrel.

Sounds like a Remington Ventilator, lots of people using it with #6 and #7 hevi shot. 


I would try some #7 hevi's through it.


I have fired a couple hundred rounds of Hevi through my "Lead Only" Kick's .660 and it's still going strong.

Sound advice...until you fracture the choke and/or damage your barrel.  Then what?

Follow the instructions of the manufacturer.  The choke might not fail the 1st time you try it.  Might not fail the 30th, but if and when it does, you have no one to blame for the expensive and potentially dangerous problem but yourself.

Then I guess I will be like the guys with the Indian Creek chokes that were rated for HTL and their chokes cracked.


I was just passing along information, lots of others are using also.


Call Kicks and tell them you want to shoot Hevi shot from their chokes and they will tell you no.  Call them right back and ask them about Nitro's loaded with hevishot and the answer is yes.  What is the difference?


If you are not comfortable shooting HTL through your choke then don't do it and order one that is rated for it.

They will work fine.  I got one and shoot Hevi-13 loads through it and I'll keep shooting them through it.  That's a good choke.  But maybe just a hair on the tight side with 2oz loads.  But I have got some like 282 shot in a 10" at 40yds with the Hevi-13 2oz #7's.  But it seems a little tight in my opinion for consistently great patterns.  But it still shoot dang good. One of the better shooting chokes for like the $22 I paid for it.

That choke was made prior to the big HTL push.  It's made just like the Rem Hevi-Shot approved choke.  We have talked about this before guys.

Here's a couple to show you what that choke can do.  

Now this was a killer pattern for only 1.75oz load of #6's.  And it was only 45 degrees.  But now the other one wasn't near that good.  But it has potential.  



Here's the pattern that had 282 shot in a 10" circle on the cardboard underneath this turkey target.  

That's loading it up in my opinion.

Stick with smaller sized HTL shot (#6 or #7) and you'll be fine.     Just don't shoot any steel shot.

Thanks for the replies and the targets. #7 HTL(heavyweight or hevi) is what I would shoot through it. I do remember it being call a Ventilator.

On a side note, my Ventilator throws a really nice, even 13" pattern at 35 Yards with 2 Ounces of #6 Lead.  173 in 13".  It likes both #6 and #7.5 Lead.
