I have access to a property that is trying to reduce the deer herd but is only able to allow bow only hunting. Well, I went back to a spot that I have seen does off of twice. Both times they were out of range, but the same spot. After seeing them yesterday, I scouted where they were coming from. There is a nice set of White Oaks that are dropping like rain. I found the perfect tree 20 yards from the spot. I knew I needed my climber. Got up extra early this AM and walked the 600+ yards to the tree. I settled down for a long wait before daylight. I knew the wind was not ideal but figured between the Scent Away shower last night, and the clean clothes, scent was minimal. I am hunting on a logging road that is bordered on one side by a beaver pond and a line of mature oaks to the other. I can see to the north down the road about 100 yds. About 7:25 this morning I had looked both directions down the road, then down as I adjusted in the seat. I heard crunching to my right (north up the road). I turned to see this spike munching on the acorns. I sat a few minutes and waited for him to inch closer. He came towards me and was quartering toward me a little. I knew he was about 15 yards. I raised my McPherson Diamond Back VX (Lefty) and put the pin on him and the Carbon Xpress Predator II launched toward him. The shot was a tad farther back than I liked. I knew it was a full liver shot, out the guts. I was hopeing for a tad bit of lung too. I wanted to wait a while but I am very impatient. I got down to the arrow and there was no blood. Just gut. I walked to where he entered the woods. Good blood entering the woods. I tracked it for about 50 yards. I decided to back out even though there was good blood. I gathered my stand and walked out. I was near a buddy so I went to see him while I waited. He was able to come give me a hand tracking. I picked up where I stopped tracking. Side Story: When I picked up the trail again I came to a point where there was a funny looking black stick with yellow stripes on it. A few Seconds later I realized it was a king snake. I said "hello" "I will just slip around you if you dont mind". I picked back up the trail. THe blood was starting to thin out. By this time my buddy was there to help. We were in a heck of a thicket. The trail stopped. I started to make a circle. Jason found a spot where it had laid recently. He figured we had jumped it. On my way to him, I jumped the deer. He watched it move off. He pointed me in the right direction to walk. After a few steps it crashed about 40 yards from me. I steped a few more steps and it thrashed in the same spot. I saw it trying to get out of a creek bed. I ran up to it and grabbed it by the horns. Jason brought my bow over. I finished him off quickly. Then came the LOOOOOG drag out. But it was worth every hundred yards. My spike unfortunately was smaller than my wifes. Oh well.
