Been itchin to get out in the woods, so I've decided to take up coyote hunting. Totally new to it, and so far I've been stood up to the coyotes so far, but I have a good area and I think it's just a matter of time before I get one to come in to my calling.
Last Saturday, I decided to go out for the first time. I just about jumped clear out of my skin when I saw a black shadow not even a foot to my right. Literally standing right next to me, was a hen turkey, with about 8 of her friends. I jumped, and she jumped and ran about 5 feet away, putting quietly. I was so focused upwind knowing that no coyotes would come from downwind that I wasn't even paying attention to what was behind me and the tree I was leaning against. They continued to feed around me but were aware of my presence and got no closer than 5 or so feet.
Got up from my spot once about 20 mins after the hens were gone, and walked down the field to the other open part of a clearing (I hunt an old apple orchard). I saw movment, and saw about 15 turkeys crossing the clearing while I was still 200 yards uphill from them, so i snuck down to the left so that a ridge seperated me from them, and walked until I got to about 60 yards from where they were, and climbed up the ridge but no turkeys. Instead were 2 HUGE doe. They fed in the field for about 20 minutes before I decided to use my squealing rabbit call to mess with them. They started clearin their sinuses at me, getting all pissed off, and then left the field and went into the woods.
Now, this morning, my day off, I got up early to go out into the woods, with a good friend, Nick. Walking out, Nick stops to load his gun. We are in a field with an old abandoned house in the center. Looking around with the headlamp, I noticed a light out front of the house. I motioned to Nick, and told him we need to get off of their property and get out of the field, because someone occupied the area now. Well just as I'm explaining this, I notice another light right next to it, and this time, I realize I'm looking at 2 sets of eyes, standing feet from the house. The 2 coyotes walked within 30 yards of us right passed us on the old driveway.
Finally, we reach the opening of the field we planned on hunting. Nick has gotten scared and took the headlamp from me(LOL), and he's about 3 steps ahead of me, when all I hear is "Oh sh**.. Oh Sh".. As I try to look around him, I realize I'm looking at at least 5 sets of eyes right to our left-front side. They took about 2 steps towards us(which is why the "oh sh**" was repeated, and then jumped out of sight a long a path in the woods. They were probably only 15 yards when we walked in on them. We set up across the field, but sadly the wind wasn't right, and was blowing at our backs... I didn't think it was a good idea to set up where we jumped them either, so we set up anyway. Saw nothing, but it was sure an exciting trip in the woods in the AM.
Sorry to ramble guys...
But, one last thing, just put a new .243 on layaway at cabela's, payed half of the price, comes with a camo'ed stock, a parkorized barrel, holds 4+1, bolt action. It's the Savage Axxis, heard great things about them, and I thought it was a good caliber because I have a 7 year old brother who will be 10 before I know it, and the price and quality are what I am looking for in my first rifle.
