Quote from: turkeymanjim on February 20, 2025, 12:26:17 PMGuys with e- bikes for turkey hunting.  What is a good e-bike for turkey hunting under $2000. Something that is good for rough terrain and doesn't need to much maintenance.

I've had an electric bike before, a ebike, but it's a bit over budget, but it's a great bike to ride and suits a wide range of terrain; it's battery needs more feedback from others!

You know this E bike deal struck my funny bone. I was telling my young friend (28) I can't cover the territory i use to. He said have you considered an E bike? I replied me (74) I concentrate on staying on my own two feet is a feat in itself.!

Something to consider! Ha

Do some research but you can build a really nice mid-drive for a little over a grand.
Nothing like seeing a kids eyes light up upon hearing that first gobble.

Public land is available for all who have a license and want to hunt. I am ok with the crowds in the woods. But I have a problem with the E-bike users, not so much the E-bike itself. For example, if you are in the areas that I hunt in my home state, and you are walking on a certain road at a certain point prior to daylight, and an E-bike runs up on you - they know (based on limited access points) you have been walking for an hour plus or more to be there ahead of them. Many times, you are within 100 yards of a roosted bird, and for them to blow past you at full speed without saying a word is wrong to say the least. They have to know that if you are on foot, that you more than beat them to that location.

Another example - you are on a ridge ten minutes from gobble time, and an E-bike, or two come flying down the road with big spot lights on their bikes, lights so bright that the entire woods on both sides of the ridge is illuminated for several hundred yards (zero embellishment on that statement). I'm talking about lights bright enough to spot light a field at long distance, etc.

Or they come down a logging road running at break neck speed and they have loose stuff on their bike, and it is rattling and the birds that were gobbling, are suddenly tight lipped for about two hours.  No one should have the right to blow out a two mile stretch of a mountain that has a logging road on the top - to do so fifteen to thirty minutes before sunrise just so they can get to one finger ridge on the other end of the mtn without breaking a sweat. Opening day this past year, my buddy and I were on top standing there waiting for gobbling time, way ahead of anyone else, and here came a E-bike around the curve and it literally ran over my buddy at full speed and never stopped. The hunter just YELLED out "Sorry" as he sped around the next curve and on their way. Fortunately, my buddy was just a little bruised up from the impact. Needless to say, the bird that we knew was there, roosted 150 yards off the side, he never made a peep that morning.

A E-bike is one thing, but the way it is being used often is far another matter. The type stuff I just described, no one should be ok with that stuff going on in the woods.

Sounds like most of these situations go back to turkey hunter etiquette. If you get beat to a spot you should move on. This used to be the rule.....now people will park-come on in with you. Almost guaranteeing you will have a conflict. End up on same turkey.

It sounds to me like there is getting to be an "e-bike problem" on public areas in some parts of the country...one that might eventually spread and become an issue everywhere at some point. The question is whether there is a solution...and yes, there is.

That solution is to petition the "governing agencies" on these public areas to either curtail their use altogether...or limit their use to restricted areas. Now, my guess is that those restrictions/limitations might already exist in some of the areas discussed. If not, they should and it is up to public-land users to bring the problem to the attention of the authorities and try to get changes/compromises put in place.

Out here in the west, we don't have the e-bike problem...at least where I am at. We do, however, have something similar in the use of ATV's and other motorized vehicles. Years ago, regulations were put in place limiting their use on most public lands...and maps are available for everybody to see "what is what" both in terms of where those modes of transportation are allowed...and where they are not. Most importantly...to some of us...they also tell those of us who don't want to deal with them where we can go to get away from them.

...Just a thought...   :)

There can't be enough people out there with them for it to be a major problem. I've seen one ever in the woods hunting and he was on a main truck road. And I hunt all over the place. Not a tons of places where then are legal. Especially on closed roads.

I've had numerous encounters with them and its about a 50/50 of where they should or shouldn't be. The rules in my state used to be no motorized vehicles. Wish it would go back to that. It definitely will become a problem when more hunters own them and use them on public land.

As crazy as it sounds. Some classes of e-bikes are considered non motorized.

If it has a motor it would still be motorized in my opinion. In my opinion e-bikes are just like an electric golf car or electric utv.

In my home state, for the last three to four years, I am encountering them daily, almost without fail. I have no issue with them hunting, and even using a E-bike, it is just the way they are being used. If I was not witnessing it, I would not believe that a man could install such bright lights as they have on these bikes, and then they are riding all over the woods the hour leading up to sunrise. They will ride an entire multi mile stretch of a mountain just to access one finger ridge where "their" bird is put to bed, while blowing the rest of the birds on the 2-3 mile mtn stretch out for the morning. It is just really ridiculous is what it is.

I've seen youth hunts ruined by them  where the guy on e-bike tried chasing a gobbler that was 100yds away and closing in a corn field. My guess either an anti hunter or just an idiot trying to scout during youth season. Either way i know what that youth hunter thinks of electric bikes.
