Deer season is over for me so there is nothing else to distract my from my obsession of spring. I watched several YouTube videos this week of guys hunting in the wind. The start of their video they're complaining about it being a windy day and they hate hunting in the wind. The hunt ends with a bird flopping and he's got some hooks. I think back and have had numerous hunts the same way. Mornings where I considered sleeping in because of the wind I ended up killing some of my best birds. As I think on this I wonder if this is because the hens can't hear them gobbling as well so they have to work harder to find hens through out the days. Would like to hear your guys opinions on why and if you can relate too.

When I guided in Nebraska it would often get real windy in the afternoons, we did really well on those days.

I always figured Tom's lost track of hens on those days and were susceptible to being called in. Not sure the reason but that makes sense and it works often enough!

Last year I struck a Tim mid morning on a day I could barely hear anything, I wasn't even 100% sure it was a bird, set my friend up right there and dropped back 25 yards to call, yelped on a crystal a few times and less than a minute later, boom!  Scared the hell outta me!  Obviously that bird was close!

With all the sign we found walking out a different direction I'm thinking that bird lost track of the flock?

Wind is fine, I hunt the protected ridges out of the wind. It definitely works, the birds want to be where they can hear better and end up in these protected places. Sleeping in because of wind is not an option for me....

I've killed a couple of gobblers on windy days, the day I killed them most people wouldn't have hunted
I've also had gobblers come in silent more so on bad windy days. Bad wind is one of my least favorite ways to hunt gobblers.

WV Flopper

If I have a choice of saving a vacation day or hunting in heavy wind I am going to work.

With that said. Us Eastern hunters would probably WORK 80% of Midwest or Western states days.

Eastern windy days are not the same as western windy days. If it is blowing a mild 30mph in Oklahoma you best be in the woods.

First Oklahoma turkey I killed easily was in 40mph winds. I would not have hunted in WV that day. Second turkey was blowing slightly less..

Turkeys will go to open country on windy days, fields, pole lines, openings. They can't hear as well as on quiet days so will fear predation and rely on their eyes. Guys that stalk, walk up, run and gun, crawl and call, ect. Do well on windy days.

of my 50 years of gobbler hunting the longest beard I ever killed was on a windy day with winds gusting upwards of 40mph hunting southern WV.  I've always heard it's better to be lucky than good and I think luck played a big part that day. I usually wouldn't have thought about going in wind like that but something just pulled me there.

Tail Feathers

I won't let wind stop me from hunting.  Heavy rain and lightning may, but I look for sheltered areas on windy days.
Love to hunt the King of Spring!

One thing I noticed on very windy days is when hunting, I have watched birds gobble down wind, but didn't hear them. I wonder how many birds gobble on windy days and you don't hear them. It certainly had me thinking. I witnessed this in a heavy pine forest.

X2, I agree that the wind could prevent most from hearing them gobble....
