Mountainhunter1 wingbones!
August 13, 2024, 10:48:08 AM
I wanted to share some special bones that arrived last week from a very good guy and my friend Matthew (@mountainhunter1).
He has been honing the art of tuning wingbones and made one for me from a gobbler I killed and another for our mutual friend @Wasp with a snow goose mouthpiece from a batch of I sent earlier this year.
Both calls are killer and have the perfect rollover you need. The snow goose gives a higher pitch like a young hen and the gobbler sounds like an old hen. They are made to take in the woods and not be shelf queens, built very solid on purpose, and the colors won't give you away with too much shine or bling like many I see out there. I won't name names here, but I know that several well known call makers own or have heard Matthew's wingbones and had great things to say about them and hopefully will vouch for their sound and quality on this thread too.
Matthew and I became friends through this site and finally were able to meet in person with @Wasp at Unicoi this year. These are priceless due to the friendship behind them!
If you are looking for a great sounding wingbone call that is truly made to hunt, reach out to @mountainhuner1 on here and have a chat, you will be glad you did!

Congrats on some really cool looking wingbones. I know Matthew is a student off the craft and puts great effort into the sound and ease of use of his calls. Heads should roll!!!

Thanks for the encouragement gentlemen. When I started trying to build these bones, I had one goal - to build a call from a bird I had killed and then go back and kill another bird with that call. Maybe it was luck or just fate, but the first time I took that first wingbone into the woods, I called in a big Tom with nothing but that call from start to finish. I sat there stunned that it worked, and I was hooked (Crazy note, the Tom had an eleven inch beard and gobbled good - but had no spurs whatsoever).
I have been building these calls non stop since that day and only really care about two things. One, I want it to sound like a turkey and be easy to play, and second, I want it to be an absolute tank in the woods that will last for as long as you are physically able to hunt it. It takes more time, but my calls are bonded twice, so they are not coming a part. Looks are somewhat important (Clay Townsend drove that into my skull), but I go into the woods to kill Turkeys. If they sound good and draw easy, and they are made to be near indestructible - then mission accomplished.

A big shout out with appreciation to EZ for his input. I had sent him some sound files one night and without my asking him to do so, he gave me several tips that changed the game for me. I will ever be grateful for his input as it really helped me to be able to produce a huntable call almost every single time after being hit or miss early on in my efforts. EZ is a humble guy who is a class act, easy to talk with, - and if you want a "heads will roll " Wingbone, I would suggest that you make him your first choice when buying a call. And, If you go to Unicoi, make sure to visit his table for sure.
Also want to thank Todd Black for helping me to design a new call that I have not even unveiled yet that is likely the easiest playing wingbone that I have had the privilege of running. He has offered to help me even to the point of opening his shop up, etc. for my benefit. He is on this site (Toddman) and also at Unicoi each year (Black Dot Calls), Check his work out if you need an easy playing Trumpet or a copper pot call (His copper pots are very unique).

Good looking calls, thanks for sharing.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, tired, beat, thoroughly used up and totally worn out from chasing turkeys and loudly proclaiming; "WOW -- What a Ride!"

After a couple of weeks with this wingbone, it is as consistent as any call I've used. The thing seems to play well no matter what I do. Most of the trumpets and wingbones I have used require a cluck initially just to get the call positioned correctly. Not this one! It just plays so easy no matter where I position it. I can't tell you how pleased I am with it. Matt you really make a fine call. If anyone is looking for a wingbone, please contact Matt, I promise you will be impressed with his skill.
B.T.W playing it gets pretty addictive and you will find yourself getting really weird looks from other drivers when sitting in traffic playing a wingbone turkey call.
