I find it interesting that the OP talked about east Texas and that opening of season was set to mid April so that 50 percent of hens would be bred and nest started . It has been my observation that closer to 100 percent of hens are bred and starting to nest by the first of April in this region , but that's just me . I was on the phone yesterday with a east Texas biologist/tech , he had to call me back because he was burning . Stated they were not done burning , some more to do , this is east Texas where turkeys are really struggling . I asked why burn so late , burn when you know you will burn nest . He stated he had studied that and that turkey will re-nest all the way to August and the benefit was greater than the loss . They are killing with these burns way over their limit and out of season , it should be a crime . I for once would like to see them burn when the deer fawns were hitting the ground . Its all about the deer . To the OP , they set a season to protect the nest and breeding , then burn it down . Maybe I am not to smart , people , a lot of the problems turkeys and people face is caused by people . Things web and flow , its death by a thousand cuts , but the places I hunt I don't believe it is habitat loss . Unless they burn to late .

Sorry not you Meleagris,
Coyote, coon, possum, skunk, fox, falcons, hawks are all hard on turkey as are chemical's, chemicals are screwing up reproduction and killing poults, no till farming is a joke and Monsanto is not the God farmers should have turned too. Our country should be producing cattle not poisoned grain.
