Matt,  I have no clue?  I started loading mine 11-12 years ago.  Just finished the first box of 500 wads I bought from Tommy.  I load nothing but 20ga, most for me and the kids.  And have several buds that I load for.  I could not fathom what it would cost for 500 store bought TSS.  Don't get me wrong I do have some money invested in shot over the years. Just ordered 15 more pounds. 

Just loading for your self?  Initial buy in.  Roll crimper, hull trimmer, scale, hulls, wads, nitro cards and over shot cards.  You might have 200.00 in that.  And shot is 40.00 a pound. Off the shelf 20ga are 50.00 ish per 5, you can figure that one out.

nitro and apex
i used both.  prefer nitro slightly over the apex

Agreed. I started a few years ago and am very happy with my results

Out of curiosity, how many shells does it take to offset the expense of all of the start up equipment and start making it cheaper than buying shells? 

I briefly looked into last year, and would still like to get into it just because I like to tinker, but wasn't in the cards at the time.

Most of the components if you are lucky enough to find them must be bought in bulk, usually 100-500 each. Throw in some of the tools that you'll want and need to purchase and it's a long time and a lot of shells before you even approach a break-even price. For most people it's not about saving money. It's more about quality control and the satisfaction you derive from using a shell you made.

And...not coming up two weeks before the season, needing shells, and finding that there are none of what you want to be found anywhere. Gives me a warm fuzzy to never have to worry about supply chain issues. Now, if I could just find some #***##!!! large rifle primers!

Fella what are you looking for in primers.  Have 1k cci large rifle primers. And have some fed gm215's

Using the fed premium #7 in my SA20. Just sighted in yesterday at 38 yrds. with factory turkey choke. Threw a great pattern after 2 adjustments to red dot.
