Having issues with shell ejection on Franchi
March 18, 2022, 10:54:31 AM
Having ejection issues with 20 ga. Longbeard ammo with a Franchi Affinity III. Seems like the first shell gets stovepiped nearly every time.
Is there a solution? Maybe an aftermarket recoil spring or something of that nature?
The gun is firmly against the shoulder so it's not that.
Anybody had that problem and found s solution?

How old are the shells? Had a similar problem 3 years ago when using XR's that had sat in the truck all season. My best theory is the repeated cooling and heating up of the shells expanded the "top" half of the shell somehow and wouldn't cycle. Buddies had similar problems and had left shells in truck all season as well. When I got new shells the problem went away

Hmmm...Shells are new this year so I'd doubt that's the issue.
Getting new ammo is pretty much impossible now so couldn't test that theory.
Thanks for the response though.
Maybe going to s star crimped shell would solve it.

Doubt it is a recoil spring issue with magnum loads. New gun? Lot of the imported shotguns are shipped with Cosmoline which is basically grease that is really sticky to keep them from corroding.
I would do a complete tear down and de grease with some gun scrubber or similar, then light oil and maybe run a couple boxes of light loads through.
Seems longbeards have frequent issues with quality control.

Good point about cleaning.
I did that myself before the gun was ever fired just for that reason.
I know Longbeards have some quality control issues, esp. with the ammo shortage problems. I'm guessing they're going full bore making ammo for government and putting domestic ammo on back burner. Catching up will probably involve even more problems with quality.

Not sure how the Franchi compares to stoeger as ejection system go but my dad and I both had problems with our stoegers's ejecting. Turns out both of the recoil springs were broken in each gun. Mine in 2 pieces and his into 4. Needless to say his gun had more problems than mine. Replaced the spring in each and problems solved.

I had a issue with a versamax ...turns out the shell brass had a rounded lip to it and the ejector wouldn't grab it good enough ..it was a problem with the brass hull not the gun
I took a fine diamond hone and put a hell of a edge on the ejector.."not recommended" ... disclosure...but it worked

Have you tried other brands of shells?
I would try a different brand and if they hang up, then it's the gun and not the LBs.

Must have been a "break-in" problem since the issue is gone now.
Hate to not find SOMETHING and just have to assume but, all's well that ends well I suppose

Line your shells up on a table and see if they are all the same length. Check against some other manufacturers shells. I've had some Longbeards that were considerably longer that the should be.

Yes, I had heard that...
I had an issue with Longbeards a while ago regarding HORRIBLE patterns. Since then, I pattern one out of every box just to be sure that box is ok.
Shouldn't have to do that but Longbeard is by far best patterning non tss ammo in my experience.
