My Opening Day Longbeard
April 26, 2022, 09:22:08 PM
My Saturday morning hunt was one for the memory books.I still can't believe it happened the way it did.Climbed to the top of a mountain at 6:10 and hooted a few times. There were 2 birds that fired off in different directions that sounded like a long ways away. After thinking and listening for about 10 minutes I decided to cut the distance on the one to check if he was across the river. After walking about 150 yards the bird hammered again and he sounded a lot closer. He was under 200 yards but I believe he turned around in the tree which made him sound a lot better.I scanned the woods to find a place to hide and there wasn't much.I seen a old fallen long about 20 more yards ahead with a decent size stump on the bottom so I slid in next to it.Before I could even get my glass call out I heard scratching in the leaves. There was 2 hens that flew down and landed about 60 yards from me and were headed my
way.At
that point my heart and mind started to race. Then I seen the fan on the long beard about 100 yards away.He put on a show strutting and gobbling every time a big red headed woodpecker would holler over his head.I thought for sure I was gonna get busted before I could pull this off. Those 2 hens slowly scratched there way around the log I was on and led this Tom to 32 yards. When he got to the end of the log I slowly leaned forward and he raised up his head to look at me so I let him have
it.So
at 6:55 on opening morning I was done. After I took a few pics I sat there for a good 20 minutes soaking up the woods and the experience. There was so many ways I could have messed up this hunt like many before but the man upstairs had other plans and it played out perfect.Never had to hit the call and I was able to harvest a beautifull long beard.God is good.

Congrats on a good bird! Sounds like it worked out great for you. Seems like it just feels better when it all goes good like that.

Congrats on a fine bird! It's great when everything just works out.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, tired, beat, thoroughly used up and totally worn out from chasing turkeys and loudly proclaiming; "WOW -- What a Ride!"
