Opening weekend in MS
March 19, 2022, 07:16:34 PM
After being punished all week watching everybody hunt while I was stuck in a ups truck, I finally got to go this morning. I changed my mind about where to hunt when I got in my truck and decided to go blind to a spot we have that got thinned back in the fall. I was just about to owl hoot when I thought I heard one gobble. Moved a little closer and heard him better. He was about 300 yds off our property so I set up about 50 yds off the line. Made a tree call and he answered. Then a hen started up on the roost behind me. She pitched down about 40 yrs behind me while he was still in the tree. I jumped up and chased her off and sat back down. Made a few yelps and clucks on a Lonnie Sneed hot hen when he gobbled on the ground and sat back and waited.
Didn't hear him gobble again, then after 5 or so minutes I heard drumming but couldn't tell where. (Bad feeling). They I heard his wings dragging and he was straight in front of me like I was hoping. Dropped him at 30 yds with my 870 with Browning TSS 7x9. 3 yr old with 10" beard and a little over 1" spurs. Nice ending to a rough week

Nice going,...and good strategy running off the hen. It was a gamble that could have resulted in a busted gobbler, but it obviously worked quite well! Well done!
