Stoeger 3020 bolt handle

First time hunting with my Stoeger 3020 turkey model this morning. When I'm carrying the gun on a sling on my left shoulder the bolt handle jabs me in the side. The bolt handle is 7/8" long and comes to a semi V point. I think I'm going to grind it off to about 1/2" and make it nice and round. What would be the best way to treat/protect the area that I ground off from rust?  Anyone else have issues with their bolt handle rubbing your side?

I'd clean it real well and spray paint it with Rustoleum.
