Educational Podcast w/ Dr. Chamberlain

The Hunting Public has a new podcast where they do an extensive interview with Dr. Mike Chamberlain and a couple of his graduate students to discuss the extensive turkey research they've been doing. For turkey nerds, it's good stuff.

His podcast with Meateater last year seemed to have caused some change in the turkey hunting community and some regs. in a few states.
Hard to argue with extensive research, though guys do not seem to like his statements about spurs and age of birds, really interesting stuff on Owls taking out gobblers as well. I highly recommend listening to both.
Meateaters was last spring, I saved it on my app and listened to it 4 times.

Thanks, saved it and will listen to it later.

I always find Dr. Chamberlain`s podcasts and information to be of great interest and informative. IMO we are very fortunate to have wildlife professionals such as Dr. Chamberlain and his students out there doing the field work to benefit the birds and trying to ensure huntable populations.
It is more than a little interesting to see the reactions of people when the data results in " inconvenient truths " that don`t coincide with preconceived and personal notions of reality. " I see birds galore on my lease. Can`t be the problem that THEY say there is with the population . We don`t need no changes! ".
I`ve been privileged to hunt on 600 acres of well managed land here in Georgia. We have always had birds. I cannot and will not generalize that to the rest of Georgia or the Southeast. To do that would be unintelligent, short sighted and selfish.

Regarding spurs and age, he has the data to back it up plus I saw a post on Facebook, I know I know, but it was of a Turkey with a leg band that was banded in maybe 2016 and had 1" Spurs. Spurs were decently pointed but not a mark over an inch long. The original post was from a wildlife department stating the inaccuracy of Spurs being a measure of age. Those two statements, dr chamberlain and the wildlife agency post, are enough to validate that there is no correlation to me.

Unfortunately the Meateater podcast is the one most people listened to and not his numerous others like Cocktails and Conservation. However he is right about aging turkeys. It's either a jake or it isn't. Too much evidence supports that. I'm sure he ruffled some feathers!!!

He has several on that sight, I tried to link them but it did not work, just search his full name there and they will pop up.
I still think it is funny how similar his stuff is to Lovett Williams stuff, graphs are often close to identical.

The part about the rest of the southern states heading down the same path as Arkansas is pretty scary. In 10-15 our favorite obsession maybe look a lot different if we don't figure something out.

I thought the information on prescribed fire and acreage was something I hadn't thought about before. Pretty fascinating stuff and I'm sure glad they're doing the work. Those gobble meters they use are cool too. I recently got a finished study from NC Wildlife about a gobble study they conducted over five or so years. It obviously doesn't give you a solid number but it does show population trends in a way that most other research can't. I've tried to attach it here.

Just listened to this and realized I participated in some of the research by carrying a GPS tracker for a few days.
