Kansas General Permit vs Game Tag

Ive been to KS once before but rules have changed a little since I was there.  I can still buy two tags, a General Permit and a Game Tag. It looks like the General is good in Units 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6.  The Game Tag is good in 1 and 2.

That seems easy enough but I saw somewhere online where someone implied that the General had to be used first so to kill a bird in Unit 3 I'd have to do it first then move on to 1 and 2 with the game tag. In other words hunting east to west.

I can't find where that is stated anywhere just what I wrote in the first paragraph.  It looks like to me that I could kill a Rio in 1 or 2 with the Game Tag then drive east and shoot an Eastern in 3 with the general permit.  In theory of course.  Am I missing something?

Units 1 and 2 are the only 2 bird units  . 3,5 and 6 are 1 bird only .  But you could then kill a second in unit 1 or 2 .

Thanks for the info.  I understood the limit, but someone had implied that I had to use the general license first.  That would require me to hunt unit 3 first for an Eastern then move west to fill the game tag with a Rio in 1 or 2.

I'll plan to buy both up front, hunt for a Rio in 1 and 2 with the game tag,  then move east to unit 3 and hunt foran Eastern with the General.

Thanks again.

I don't think I've ever seen a restriction on the order in which you could fill them.

I hadn't either.  I think it was likely someone not buying the game tag until after they'd filled the general license.  In that case you would have to shoot the Unit 3 bird (Eastern) first and the Unit 1 or 2 bird second if you wanted to shoot an Eastern and a Rio.

Thanks for the info.

I think you can still take two birds on your turkey tag in certain zones but some areas are limited to just one.

Yes, but it's two separate tags, one called a general permit and the second called a game tag.  The General can be used in units 1,2,3,5 or 6.  The game tag can be used in Units 1 or 2.

There is not an order in which you have to use the tags. The only order is in how you buy the tags. The general tag must be purchased before the game tag can be added.  You can buy a general tag, tag a bearded turkey, and then go purchase the game tag after that if you wish.

Don't forget your hunting license too.

When I turkey hunt I use a DSD decoy

KS has the option of E tags now if you don't want to worry about carrying a paper permit. Works well for people that are traveling.

Thanks for the reminders guys. I won't forget the license.  I was even looking at what it costs to apply for a deer tag since I'd already have a license, but it's probably too much.  Especially when I could hunt whitetails in SD or NE a lot closer.  I'll hunt mule deer with my MT license so would like to bowhunt whitetails too.

I'll more than likely use the E tag.  It'll be a nice changefrom paper tags.
