I struck Out

Yesterday ended my unsuccessful season. I hunted as hard and as smart as $4.00 gas and 125 round trip would allow me.

They just were not working for me this year. Yesterday I was in the woods well before daylight. I was in a creek bottom full of hardwoods and an area I had seen birds roost in before.

Even in the dark I could tell all the leaves had been disturbed by feeding turkeys. But daylight and another hour brought silence and no birds.

I worked down the length of the creek and finally about 10:00 I was on a downside of a ridge with a food plot 100 yards behind me and another 150 yards in front of me. It was getting warm and I was drinking some water and eating a snack when a bird gobbled. He was not  real close but I had an idea where he was.

I went to the food plot and then to the left towards a swamp and a big creek. I thought he was at the creek. At 10:45 he gobbled again and I knew he was in the swamp.
I got to the edge and called with no response but he would gobble at random. I eased to the edge where I had good visibility and just settled in.

The bird gobbled three or more times and sounded like it got to within 60-70 yards. I never saw it and after two more hours of sitting with temps getting close to 90, I started the long walk back to the car. I stopped and called a few times but my heart wasn't in it.

I really wanted to help out the team but I guess every one does, It just wasn't meant to be, I guess.

I am going to the store to buy a butterball and then I am going to kick it all around the yard like a soccer ball....

That sounds about like my how season has been going so far, they just won't cooperate. It looks like it's starting to pick up though.

I would recomend that you thaw that bird out first.  ;)

Well Frank you gave it every effort you could and never gave up, there isn't anything you can do different if the turkeys don't want to play. It's been a tough year for everybody this spring, with the bad weather and birds not cooperating. Glad to have you on the team and look forward to next years hunts.  ;)

Scott is right Frank. You gave it your best, and nothing more can be asked.
Best of luck next spring.

They were hard to get on this year Frank, I got lucky and killed one but it wasn't a usual Georgia season for sure, there was a lot less gobbling even though there was a decent number of birds
