I know what they sound like and I know how to make them, my question is how many do you do.. a couple , three of them, a couple sets of two or three just to let him know your there and what time do you do them right when he gobbles before dawn or just wait till dawn alittle bit... just wondering for the morning...

ccleroy

Best bet is not to call until he hits the dirt.

I usually never do, but... Tomorrow is going to be my last early morning hunt ... the weather has been crap and this morning they sounded off and I did wait but they went the other way...just trying to think of something different to do... I have killed a bird doing a tree yelp, just wondering for the guys that have done it.. what do they do..I called sparingly this morning. Maybe I should just lay it on them tomorrow..

I would wait until he gobbled on the roost a few times. I would then tree yelp a couple times. Real soft and not more than 3 notes. See how he responds. I would then sit tight and wait until light. I would then slap the ground with my hat like a flydown and rake the leaves around me. I would then do a couple clucks. I would then get ready. I have killed a few birds using the above scenario. I have had some land almost in my lap.

That sounds pretty good .... I think I will do just that... cant hurt anything, I really just wanted to make sure he knew I was there.... the hat and rustling some leaves could just be the ticket... thanks

I agree with Rickey.  This scenario has been the demise of many a gobbler.

Nothing works every time, but when it does, it's like magic. Try this. If you know for sure where he is roosted, either from gobbles or from seeing him roost, do some light tree yelps as early as possible, but some distance from the gobbler. As soon as you do those, and if the conditions allow, then move 40 to 75 yards closer to the gobbler and set up. He may fly down right where you are to start looking for the hen that tree yelped farther away. Hope that makes sense.

i've had alot of luck calling to him while on roost with soft yelps and he flies down to where he wants to go... its hard to predict what he'll do

savduck

I do. Hit every gobbler I can with a few. If you ever get close enough to a gobbler roosted with hens you will hear them doing it. I want him to know Im there to. When the woods are quite a real hen many only do it once or twice. Thats all I try to do to.
