Close to the date for Unicoi's Call Makers event and I wanted to inform all Old Gobblers members that are interested in seeing the Johenning style caller, which Ole Bob, from this forum, made and gave to me, will be with me at Unicoi come January.
Also, I would like to announce I have written another book, and I will be offering the new book at Unicoi. In this new book, I have wrote about my Deer hunting, Trout fishing, Grouse Hunting, Turkey hunting, and I also tell about building a log home, which was built by my wife and myself. All the logs were cut from our home-site. Other subjects tell about growing pure non-crossed American Chestnut trees that are planted in remote mountains. The books title  "Life's Ways Lived in the North Georgia Mountains". All subjects have authentic photos, along with my childhood times and my later thoughts about today's changing world, even after 80 years.

First, I regret very much having say: I will not be able to attend the Call Maker's event at Unicoi this weekend, (due to my wife falling this week and breaking her hip). I had planed to show the Leon's turkey caller that Ole Bob, (Mr.Bobby Buckner) made last year. But, today, when I retrieved a package from my mailbox, it was a package from Ole Bob, and guest what it was? The most beautiful Leon turkey caller that anyone can imagine. The workmanship, the details followed and gone by, the quality of the wood he used, and the finishing touches, are all just unreal. Bob Buckner, is truly a master wood worker and a master turkey call maker.
His caller, is a replica of Leon Johenning's caller, but is modified to use a single rubber diaphragm, with no pins.
Mr. Buckner, you have certainly paid a great honor to the late Leon Johenning's turkey caller.

Hate to hear that Mr. Herb. Was looking forward to talking with you again. I hope your wife recovers quickly. Prayers sent your way.

Congratulations on the book Herb, and if you can post any photos of the replica caller they would be great to see

I have been in contact with Mr McClure and he wanted me to share this post along with these pictures of the caller made by Ol Bob, Mr Bob Buckner.

The following photos are of a second caller that ol Bob created and made. He actually designed it differently than the first caller. So as to make installing a single rubber diaphragm on the caller much easier, by eliminating the narrow slot on the sides where Leon's caller used small diameter pins on each side to hold the double play diaphragm. This in itself is a great feature. But that is not all he accomplished. The diaphragm can be mounted across even with the angled wooden part were the upper lip incerts. Different lips, probably require different amounts of alignment diaphragm to the angled lip place, much like a kisser button on a trumpet caller is not the same for everyone.

I found Bob's second caller to be probably the best of all the Leon callers I have ever had, and one of the easiest callers of this design to call with that I have ever called on. Yes, there are differences in the way different Leon's callers will call. I have called with maybe a dozen different callers, and I have three callers that I used when hunting,  One will cluck better than the others. One will yelp better for me than the others, and a third one will purr easier and better than the others. However, different rubber can make a difference, as well as the tension of the diaphragm. No doubt this a difficult caller to learn and maintain, but it will call gobblers for me.
